Sergeant Theresa H. Foiles spent 20 years with the NYPD, including 9 years in the rank of Sergeant, and was assigned to the Firearms & Tactics Section. She died on September 24, 2023, from a World Trade Center-related illness. Congratulations to Sergeant Detective Squad Kevin Gierloff of the Transit Robbery Squad on his retirement after 31 years of service with the NYPD, including 21 years in the rank of Sergeant. A street in Massapequa Park, Long Island, was renamed on Sept. 19 in honor of Ret. Sgt. Charles Afanasewicz of the Harbor Unit, who passed away from 9/11 related illnesses on July 4, 2023. The 33-year veteran was also a Vietnam & Coast Guard veteran & longtime liaison between the NYPD & the Coast Guard. We will NEVER FORGET!

Today we recognize the 79th birthday of the United States Air Force. Since 1947, generations of Airmen have served our nation at home and around the world. We extend our respect and gratitude to all who have worn the uniform, with special recognition for our NYPD Sergeants and fellow members of the Department who also serve in the United States Air Force, Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard.

Fifty-one years ago today, Sergeant Frederick T. Reddy of the 9th Precinct was killed in the line of duty. Sergeant Reddy and Police Officer Andrew Glover were shot on East 5th Street between Avenues A and B on the Lower East Side. Both officers were fatally wounded. Sergeant Reddy had served the NYPD for 28 years. We remember Sergeant Timothy Murphy of the 8 Precinct, now known as the 6 Precinct, who died in the line of duty on September 14, 1931. Sergeant Murphy was shot and killed while confronting a group committing a robbery on East 13th Street in Manhattan. At One Police Plaza this week, SBA Vice President Edmund Small lifted young Grayson Nelson up to see his father’s name on the NYPD’s 9/11 Memorial Wall. Retired Chief Gerald Nelson, who led Patrol Borough Brooklyn North and served the NYPD for more than four decades, died on May 10, 2024, from a 9/11-related illness. The family of Sergeant Special Assignment Paul R. Hargrove gathered at the NYPD’s 9/11 Memorial Wall at One Police Plaza this week, joined by SBA Vice President Edmund Small and retired Chief John Clune. A longtime member of Emergency Service Truck 10, Sergeant Hargrove served 35 years with the NYPD, including time as an SBA delegate, and died on March 8, 2024, from cancer related to his work in the World Trade Center search and recovery effort.
