Animal movement is complex, depends on many interacting factors, and can be hard to accurately predict. Here we present a novel approach using a deep learning step selection framework: tinyurl.com/2em9yyjb, with lots of supporting info and code! swforrest.github.io/deepSSF/

The first many-analysts study in ecology is finally published! 🥳🙌 300+ coauthors and 5+ years, this was a massive effort by @Elliot_Gould_ @HannahSFraser @TimParker88 and co. Open access 👉 bmcbiol.biomedcentral.com/ar…

NEW JOB in #ornithology to develop apps for #biologging data with @MovebankTeam: buff.ly/4hVSIsH

Stoked to have a cover photo for @EcographyJourna! In our paper doi.org/10.1111/ecog.07421 we included temporal dynamics into SSFs, resulting in daily patterns of movement and habitat selection. Simulating then gave us dynamic spatial predictions Code! github.com/swforrest/dynamic…

I'M LICHEN IT! 🤯💚 LOOK AT THOSE ANTENNAE!🤩 We just finished a POSTER on the Katydids of Manu!! (On our Patreon)! 👀 But, THIS is the craziest Katydid I've ever had the pleasure of seeing! Perfectly mimicking lichen growing on a tree, it blends in so well with the rainforest!🌳

Fantastic week at @ISEC_stats_ecol in Swansea last week - such a wide array of inspiring ideas! Thanks to the excellent organising committee and @QUTDataScience for funding. Somehow I also managed to aquire a souvenir... 🥳 #ISEC2024

The #ISEC2024 group foto in sunny Swansea Bay 😊

Had a wonderful time at #ISEC2024 @ISEC_stats_ecol. Big thanks to the organising team and to @QUTDataScience and @saef_arc for helping me attend! 😊👏

17 MILLION insects migrate through a 30m Pyrenean mountain pass every autumn! They fly through the mountains on their remarkable journeys from northern Europe (including the UK) into Spain and beyond for the winter! Our new paper is out right now: royalsocietypublishing.org/d… 🧵

Excited to see our paper accepted in TMLR. This work, a collaborative effort with David Nott, @dtfraz, @DavidJWarne, and @chris_drovandi, proposes robust sequential neural likelihood, a simulation-based inference method that is robust to model misspecification.

New paper! Here we GPS-tracked kākā @NZEcosanctuary, and found that younger kākā were more exploratory and had larger home ranges, which increased their exposure to risk outside the safety of the fence. We also present an approach for dynamic space use. conbio.onlinelibrary.wiley.c…

Yesterday I presented my final PhD seminar on the use of @bayesian models to improve the spatial resolution of health data in Australia🎉Huge thanks to all those who supported me through this journey, particularly @QUTDataScience and @CCQld!

Congratulations to our Centre Director, @KerrieMengersen - just awarded the Ruby Payne-Scott Medal by the Australian Academy of Science. The medal is one of the @Science_Academy's most prestigious awards, recognising researchers of the highest standing over a career.

I'm excited to share that I published a first version of my Statistics 4 Ecologists book with University of Minnesota Libraries Publishing. You can now download a (FREE) pdf version of the book here: conservancy.umn.edu/handle/1…
