We've heard nothing but crickets over a week after I called for a classified Senate briefing on AI risks, including cybersecurity and stopping the flow of AI chips and manufacturing equipment to China.
Maybe Trump's not worried because his family has hundreds of millions (if not billions) tied up in the AI economy.
President Donald Trump said Tuesday at the United Nations that he is changing the term "artificial intelligence" to "super intelligence" because it's "more accurate," as he dismissed global concerns about the technology and its effects on humanity.
"From this point forward, all of United States documents and hopefully the world's, will be changed to use the much more accurate term super, as opposed to artificial," Trump said during his address to the UN General Assembly. "So it's super intelligence."
His comments follow repeated warnings about how rapid advances in AI threaten to outpace humans' ability to safely develop the technology, including calls from prominent tech leaders for stronger government oversight.
Trump dismissed most of the concerns over AI, saying the people who are warning that AI is going to "kill us" are the same ones who warned about global warming, a real, human-driven phenomenon that the president has dismissed as a hoax.
While Trump said "we have to be careful" with AI, he said the U.S. is only "going to encourage it, not rein it in."
"I'm not going to stifle growth of something that will be bigger than the industrial revolution," he said.
