On Monday the European Commission designated ChatGPT a Very Large Online Search Engine under the DSA, with Reddit and Roblox picking up very large platform status in the same round. For OpenAI this mostly means compliance work. For the rest of us, the interesting part is that a chat interface is now, legally speaking, a search engine.
DSA's search engine obligations are mostly about information - risk assessments, external audits, an ad repository where relevant, and a channel for researchers to request data.
If you compare that to how brands have operated for the past two years -- guessing at how they show up in AI answers, running prompt panels, trying to infer citation patterns from tiny samples. All because these systems publish nothing and there's no console to log into.
Not expecting anyone to get a keyword report out of this. The disclosures will focus on systemic risk, not your product category, and the timelines mean most of it won't land until next year.
Still, the direction is kinda clear. AI answers are no longer a black box you can only poke at from the outside. They're becoming a regulated surface with documentation attached.
So if you're building an AI-visibility practice, the smart move over the coming months is to watch which disclosures actually materialize and building your reporting around those.
