honestly, this is incredible.
a developer got tired of paying for Photoshop and built their own alternative. it's called Compositor, it's open source, and it already has over 8,000 stars on GitHub
what it offers on paper:
→ layers, masks and blend modes, the foundation of any non-destructive editing workflow
→ content-aware fill, which rebuilds pixels from the surrounding context
→ select subject and remove background, so automatic segmentation
→ a Camera Raw style filter for developing and adjusting RAW files
→ healing brush and clone stamp for retouching
all in 11 MB, no subscription
what I'm most curious about is the technical side. how it handles segmentation and fill without a multi-GB installer, whether it supports PSD files, how it performs on large images, and whether the edits are truly non-destructive
I'm not calling it the end of Adobe until I see it on real projects, but the fact that something like this exists and you can read the source code is great news
I'm going to test it properly and I'll report back 👇
