TUESDAY EVENING NOTES.... *Tropical Depression Nine is forecast to become Hurricane Isaias by Thursday, with landfall near the Alabama Gulf Coast late Friday night or Saturday morning. *NHC is forecasting Isaias to reach category two strength with winds of 100 mph south of the Alabama coast, but some weakening is possible just before it moves inland due to stronger winds aloft/shear. Still, it is expected to be a dangerous storm with major impact. *Although the storm is expected to be compact for the next few days, it will likely grow significantly in size, particularly on the eastern side, when it reaches the northern Gulf Coast. Therefore, based on the forecast uncertainty and expected larger size, don't focus on the forecast points and watch for updates. *With the circulation expected to move northward through eastern Mississippi, that puts Alabama on the "dirty" east side of the circulation. *Rain amounts could exceed 5-6 inches near the coast with potential for flooding. Storm surge flooding is also likely; NHC will be much more specific tomorrow. *Rain amounts for the rest of Alabama will be in the 1-3 inch range, with isolated heavier amounts. Heavier totals will likely be over the western half of the state. Some inland flooding is possible. *Gradient winds will be highest, of course, near the Gulf Coast. But the western half of Alabama could see winds gusting to 40/45 mph Saturday. *A few isolated tornadoes will be possible across Alabama Saturday. *For the Bama/Georgia game, rain is likely with winds possibly gusting to 30/40 mph. There could be a tornado threat during the game, depending on the track and position of the remnant tropical low. *The weather will be much better Sunday as the low moves northward away from Alabama. The Gulf Coast should be mostly rain-free Sunday. *With any tropical system, the forecast can change quickly. Pay attention to updates. Residents from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle should closely monitor the storm; be sure you have your hurricane plan in place and ready to implement if needed.
