Today is the first anniversary of the replica 1825 train on the first day of the Stockton and Darlington Railway 200 celebrations. However, a week earlier we ran a test run for 3 miles up the 1in220 incline from Bishop Auckland to Shildon, including through Shildon Tunnel.

Another day in the rotten life-of-labour. The British Army has literally halted collective training until the end of the year to save cash. Challenger 2 tanks parked in hangars, Apache gunships grounded, and live-fire exercises cancelled because the MoD cannot afford the fuel, ammunition, or maintenance hours to run them. Yet ministers are still strutting across NATO summits lecturing near-peer adversaries about British military deterrence. A complete and utter national humiliation.

Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Quebec (13 Sep 1759) which my Regiment played a prominent part in. Major General James Wolfe (aged 32!) died leading the attack. The battle also claimed the life of his French opponent, General Montcalm.

I was exceedingly fortunate to be posted to Berlin from 92-94 (we were the last British Battalion there) in the final days of steam on the Deutsche Reichsbahn. I had just cabbed 52 8075 from Zoo Station and here she departs Spandau heading west. She was shedded at Wustermark.

A trip down memory lane for Veterans who served in South Armagh. Two clips. Bessbrook helipad in 2001, and the quite extraordinary transformation of the site filmed yesterday.

Was a busy day! Visited the Teebane bomb memorial too. I was the first soldier on the scene having taken over my company in Cookstown 2 days earlier. My first visit after 34 years. RIP the victims.

I delayed my departure from York just to get this, and joy of joy this beauty turned up. @railnigel will no doubt share the sentiment 😁

Just said goodbye to my clients from East Japan Railways. They enjoyed being transported in style - a 1949 Bristol single decker.

Today is the Makerfield By-Election, but more significantly it is also Waterloo Day, commemorating the battle of 1815. I wonder if Andy Burhham will today emulate Wellington or Napoleon?

Putting the football paraphernalia to one side, the Refreshment Room at Newcastle Central Station is an absolute gem.

5th day in Darlington Memorial Hospital. @NHSEngland Obviously rather not be here but I must say the experience has been 100% positive. In particular the food has been impressive. Varied menu options and always hot!!

Just watched the World Snooker Final on TV. My hearing is not great but please reassure me that I didn’t hear booing when the Chinese chap won. Appalled if I did but hope I didn’t.

For the first time since construction (and won’t be repeated for a VERY long time) LNER A1 Pacific Tornado is appearing at the East Lancs Railway’s Legends of Steam gala event in non-bulled condition reflecting the appearance likely to have been found in the 1960s. Looks great

Yesterday the Sierra Leone National Railway Museum was delighted to host a very special visit from the Sierra Leone Autism Society, supported by volunteers from the UK. As ever, the pump trolley rides were a massive success!!
