I see these things and I'm just like - clearly whatever I'm doing and thinking about isn't ambitious enough, and also who knows what even matters any more. the machines are eating the world
You know that part of every AI-kills-everyone scenario where the skeptic says 'well then people would notice and collectively demand we shut it down'?
Well, we're testing the second half of that in real time. How's it going?
to steelman this scenario, i think you could say that AI misbehavior has not been perfectly covert and has been gradually escalating so one might expect soon we will see AI stealing tons of real money, harming or killing a small number of people etc. which would lead to that
This summer I built an open world point and click game where you're a six year old who wakes up with your current memories in 2001 and has to figure this out. 2001 internet and NPC dialogue simulated by LLMs.
maybe if you had five default dialogue options or
'say your own thing' most people would very rarely say their own thing and the economics would work out in the average case?
yes, could definitely work especially at scale. your game sounds great, hope you find a good way to share it! your description reminds me of store.steampowered.com/app/2… which is fantastic, I highly recommend if you haven’t already played it
that was my conclusion too, it'll unlock an incredible new world for games when we go down 1 OOM. right now you can spend a lot of money and feel the potential at your fingertips but you can't make a commercial product
yep, exactly! i've been exploring the middle ground of like "what if we generate 1M dialogue options, cache them and then map them somehow to get AI-like breadth without having to actually hit the model." but without full free text input it doesn't quite hit the same
could do it with open-weight models (though in my testing for the NPCs, the Chinese open-weight models were markedly worse than Sonnet at believable rule-adhering dialogue. Astra's excellent but out of reach financially)
yeah i tried with deepseek recently and it just wasn't there yet for cheap models. exactly like you said, anything good enough to do rule-adhering dialogue was gonna be like 0.50c per player hour. close to something commercially viable but needs another OOM of cheapness
Games are great and you can learn a lot from games. But, I write for the Argument, 'edutainment' is usually 'a mediocre game as a bribe for doing work', not a game which is fun on its merits and also builds skills: theargumentmag.com/p/homewor…
obviously this person is specifically silly but im wondering whether this kind of desire is also distinctly masculine. do women generally have it the same way or with the same intensity?
unclear to me but seems like answer could go either way.
totally nonjudgmental abt this btw
I’m on r/men again, they’ve been asked “if you want kids, why wouldn’t you consider adopting or fostering?” And some of them replied “I want to continue my bloodline/legacy/last name.” Like… what legacy?? Jeff Smith????
i don’t really feel strongly about the bloodline/legacy framing specifically, i’d say part of the goal in my case is trying to continue some of my/wife’s unique strengths/values into the next generation while also trying to improve in small ways, iteratively on the core formula

Q-UP is releasing in two days! If you are an old pro starcraft korean restreamer who loves nubby’s number factory style build your own zachtronics PoE grid gameplay with an incremental twist then check it out.
Everyone else, flip a coin. If it comes up heads you can play too.
Reviewing last year’s Predictions, we scored 5/10. Here is a sample of our 10 predictions for next year:
- A Chinese lab tops a global leaderboard.
- AI agents make a real scientific discovery.
- Datacenter NIMBYism hits US elections.
- Trump bans state AI laws (illegally).
Only have an inside view on one of these but I've tried very hard to prototype any interesting generative AI games and I think it would require some unlikely Among Us level small mega hit that manages to solve the problem of shoving a vibe machine into a clockwork design. 10% imo
I've got a new game coming out soon called Q-UP. It's a coin flipping eSport -- you can play the demo now!
Please wishlist us to appease the mighty steam algorithm in hopes that it will smile upon us.

Baby Steps, the game I've been working on for 6 years with @gabecuzzillo and @maxiboch, is out on PC and PS5! We've put a feature-length film's worth of stupid cutscenes in this thing, and I hope you like them. But if not, you can skip them.... OR CAN YOU????
RTs appreciated 🙏
Heya @stiknork, do you have plans to ever release the source code for SmileBot? I really loved the experience and still think about it every now and then, and I would hate for it to dissappear into the void
Unfortunately the source code is pretty useless at the moment since it's all heavily tied to a library that Discord no longer uses, but SmileBot is one of a handful of projects I plan on bringing up to playable again once our company is a little less busy!
