"I think it's disingenuous to say that crime is down. Numbers are easy to fudge and they do it all the time,” said "Sam," a now-retired Minneapolis police officer.
Sam spoke openly about the limited number of officers and their ability to serve the public in such challenging circumstances.
"And there’s officers that are going through training and failing miserably but being pushed through," he said.
Sam worked in the Cedar Riverside area for decades. The area has been recognized for having the highest concentration of Somali residents in Minneapolis.
Even with decades of experience, Sam said, “I’ve never been to a DOA involving a Somali, never in my career. And I spent many, many years on the street … And I find it very strange that something that happens routinely in the department on a daily basis that you do not see any Somali DOAs. It’s very odd. I would love to know the reason why.”

Could you explain precisely how exactly this was timed? People are reacting in real time to an event that occured days ago. There is no possible way to have discussed the event prior to the event occuring. And one big LOL of you think we've forgotten the fraud

So now the message has shifted to fear: put Somali faces next to gangs, shootings and crime, repeat it over and over, and make white suburban families believe Somalis are a threat to their safety and their way of life.
And the timing matters.
Minnesotans are facing one of the most consequential elections in decades. Almost as soon as early voting began, gang violence and anti-Somali rhetoric started dominating the airwaves.
Which raises an obvious question.
With the full weight of a federal government that has been openly hostile toward Somalis, are we really supposed to believe that the FBI, federal prosecutors and local law enforcement agencies, with all the resources at their disposal, don’t know what is happening or who is responsible?
If gangs are behind this violence, then name them. Who are these gangs supposedly wreaking havoc in our communities? Who leads them? Where are the charges? Where is the evidence?
Instead, the broader Somali community is being smeared in openly racist terms.
And when elections get close, we’ve seen this playbook before.
Take the alleged actions of a few people. Attach them to an entire community. Flood the airwaves with fear. Turn Somali identity itself into the story. Then use that fear to stir up racial resentment among white suburban voters.
That is how a public-safety issue gets turned into a political weapon.
Call it what it is: racial scapegoating dressed up as a public-safety debate.
