It is the baseload solution in parts of the US our part of the Northeast. The Megatons to Megawatts program turned 20,000 nuclear warheads into fuel that powered 10% of US electricity, which is real swords to plowshares stuff. And no plants create little waste.
putting nuclear on a pedestal as the only technology that can do that is factually incorrect and erases incredible harms done to communities around the world and particularly here in the American west that have been devastated by uranium mining. geothermal, batteries, hydro when done right, offshore wind... nuclear may be a part of the mix but to date it has not proven to be cost-effective or free from significant harm.

In a depressing new state filing, all of the DSA Socialists in Office slate serving in the state legislature have joined other state Dems in opposing the governor's landmark Nuclear Reliability Backbone initiative. Specifically, they "oppose the use of any taxpayer or ratepayer subsidies to support the construction of new nuclear power plants in New York." Why? Because, they argue, nuclear is too expensive, too slow, and what-about-the-waste. The same old New Left shit.
When will Zohran's abundance left approach be applied to energy? When will DSA abandon its green NGO advisors on energy issues?

The culture of staff leaks in the Democratic Party is obviously individualistic and bad in its own right
After her husband died, Mary Peltola asked her staff to feed her chameleon in Alaska while she was in DC. A few years later, a staffer complains about being asked to do that to the NYT, trying to squeeze it into some pattern of “bad boss” behavior.
People get mad at me when I’m critical of young staffers — who are adults! — when they behave like this. But this kind of petulance really has no place in decent society. Her husband died, just feed the frickin lizard and deal with it.

Just one ex: In absence of strong wage pressure, which in good measure comes from tight labor markets (state policy fosters) and union organizing, you can run competitive firms that are far more labor-intensive than tech frontier dictates. That's a massive waste of human time.
The issue is badly run government programs never end, where badly run private enterprises do, and they do not affect you like the government programs, because like the internet you can route around the private, not the government.

This from Zohran is excellent. And efficiency is a good socialist value. Badly run programs burn state money that could've served better ends. Capitalism wastes resources/time too (health insurance middle men, cheap labor sweated out around the world).

My reaction to the NHJ piece is that the PMC obsession with socially reproducing itself is not just incompatible with, but antithetical to, its egalitarian ideals. These are opposite and irreconcilable wishes, this is the core hypocrisy of our class, and it is crazymaking.

Excellent historical account of social democracy by @sunraysunray. I would argue that the key constraint is that we need democratic control over mobile capital and finance. The lack of that killed Blum and Mitterrand, but its presence explains the success of the 30 golden years.
Social democracy transformed the 20th century, giving working people a share of wealth and power their grandparents could scarcely imagine.
But the movement that set out to overcome capitalism ultimately struggled to defend what it had won within it. jacobin.com/2026/09/social-d…

I find it interesting and hopeful that the Mamdani Administration has established an "Office of Worker Power." They could have called it the "Office of Labor Law Enforcement," or the "Office of Worker Wellbeing," or "Information." But they put it right out there: "Worker Power!"
