My thoughts on the state of the tech industry in the frontier lab era

This may create a semi permanent tech elite within tech itself Difficult to communicate to Gen Z the difference between now and the 2010’s, when there was an abundance of comfortably six figure tech jobs for anyone who wanted one, but no real scramble to be ‘post economic’

Brazil’s results tonight are a big endorsement for the idea that every country should have a second “are you you sure about that” election a couple weeks after the first one for the important stuff

This is one of the obvious problems with prediction markets becoming commercial ventures with massive money involved
So I found Wedgewood’s Kalshi account. He goes by Andrew and has been insider trading using the fake polls that he was posting. @Kalshi @KalshiSupport do something about this

EXCLUSIVE: Elon Musk came to Donald Trump with the plan to throttle Ukraine’s use of SpaceX’s Starshield satellite internet network, sources have told the Telegraph. The tech billionaire made the proposal during the US President’s row with Volodymyr Zelensky over strikes on Russian oil refineries. ‘The reality is that they were both in it,’ a senior source said of Musk’s and Trump’s involvement. But after a night of carnage in Kyiv caused by the slowdown, Musk was alarmed about the possibility of adverse consumer reaction in Europe. The SpaceX boss then proceeded to tweet, blaming the US administration, and ultimately, President Trump for authorising the slowdown. ‘He tweeted out that he was innocent and that it was the US administration that did it,’ the source said.

Theory: SF tech/AI is being fueled by two schools of eccentric thought Palo Alto thought: Peak VC/"founder": Fund the slop, cosplay as genius, cozy up to MAGA Berkeley thought: Peak weird nerd: The Machine will max lightcone utils, yay! Africa charity > Oakland charity

The last straw was my receiver fumbling at midfield on a deep ball with 1 second left. and they give the other team the ball where my qb threw from. 50 yard field goal and they win.

People spent 16 years begging for the BCS to get bigger. They resisted. People spent a decade begging for the CFP to expand beyond 4. They resisted. For the first time ever, people are saying "We like it at the size it is, really." They blew it up within 3 years.

My impression is a lot of the people working on AI alignment are not as altruistic as they claim, in the following sense: AI alignment is their dream job. It’s highly interesting to them, and as the stakes get higher, they’re enjoying becoming very important

Nice visual metaphor for LLMs replacing the messy, chaotic, diverse distribution of human output with a straight and narrow version of intelligence that produces spiky weirdness
This is the least surprising graph in the world if you understand how gradient descent works.

Billions of dollars’ worth of contracts predicting oil would fall and the S&P 500 would rise were placed about 15 minutes before Trump announced a U-turn on Iran in a post on Truth Social. CFTC staff began to investigate-- then were told to lay off. bloomberg.com/news/features/…

One of the lamest things about twitter is how people just post a totally normal picture of an average looking person they are in an argument with and all the people on their side responds with LOL WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE THAT like clapping seals. I dare you to apply that standard irl

Instinct CEO Noah Shinn says agents will let restaurants give tables to birthdays and anniversaries over whoever clicks first "And traditionally, because of the way that the internet has worked, at least for reservations, it's been first come first serve. So anyone that comes in, no matter how important or how not important it might be, whoever gets in first gets the reservation." "But what if you had the ability for the agent to be able to communicate on both sides, communicate, hey, this is important. This is actually the person's spouse's birthday, the 30th birthday, a very special event is coming up." "And the restaurant too can say, let's actually prioritize birthdays or major decade birthdays or major anniversaries or these certain people, I don't know, whatever it might be, right?" "So now with the ability, with all of the logistical burden of having to describe exactly what your case is and what's happening and why it's important. Now we have the ability to perfectly match what does the restaurant want? What does the user want?" "And that will result in more special events for the users being able to actually have a spot in the restaurant."

IF YOU LIVE IN TEXAS (or any state tbh) MAKE SURE TO CHECK YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION ASAP.
After further reporting by @NataliaECG, we now know this error affected at least 200,000 should-be Texas voters. What a mess.

Just learn to repair Patek Phillippes
If you know anyone looking for a good and fairly AI-proof career, watchmaker (= watch repairer) seems a promising one. Every watchmaker seems to have more work than he can handle, mechanical watches are increasingly popular, and it will be a while before AI does this.
