I've written to my MP to demand that the Government adopts a #naturefriendly approach to planning and development. Will you take action too? Help ensure that nature is at the heart of government's #planningreformsaction.rspb.org.uk/page/1595…
51 MPs have responded to consistents asking them to sign this Early Day Motion (which is like a petiton for MPs). Please email your MP this link, asking them to sign!
Securing habitat for endangered swifts and other cavity nesting birds edm.parliament.uk/early-day-…
Email angela.rayner.mp@parliament.uk simply saying MANDATE SWIFT BRICKS PLEASE - say that in the subject line of the email too. Please share widely. This article sums up why well. Labour should make a swift U-turn on bricks that provide nesting places theguardian.com/environment/…
I’m calling it now… the last goverment was until recently one of the worst of all time for nature, farming and food policies
THIS GOVERNMENT IS WORSE
And I have a little theory about what’s happening…
🧵
The Planning & Infrastructure Bill gives developers a licence to trash nature. We can deliver affordable housing without destroying our natural heritage.
I urge the Government to accept my amendments, safeguarding irreplicable habitats like chalk streams.

Labour are backtracking on a plan to help save birds: by blocking a new rule that would make developers put a £35 nest brick in every new home. They think it'll help win them votes - we need to show it would do the opposite. Sign the petition 38d.gs/dlkr
Swifts always return to the same nest each year. If their nests are blocked, they may not be able to breed. This can lead to a decline in their numbers. It’s important to protect their nests when working on roofs to help them survive and breed. 2/2
This swift lost its nesting cavity due to construction work. It doesn’t understand and keeps coming back, still looking, brushing against the wall, trying to cling to it. This behavior usually lasts about ten days 1/2
Story here. Protected spaces risk being lost under the new planning bill, says Office for Environmental Protection. Labour using Brexit to weaken environmental protections. Will @MaryCreagh_ describe Dame Glenys Stacey's analysis as "deeply misleading" ?theguardian.com/politics/202…
Head of land use planning at The Wildlife Trusts, @beckyjpullinger says:
"@GOVUK can no longer ignore calls to make changes to the #PlanningBill and must work quickly to install the necessary safeguards to ensure nature is protected."

2025 is a year for early #Swifts! Don't worry though the vast majority are still making their way. Wishing them a good year and home to come back to 🙏🏼
Four #Swifts screaming and diving low over the Valence Road, #Lewes and one entered a nest space on the old shop. Nine bangs at boxes and house walls in De Montfort Road between numbers 29 and 9 and in Western Road we saw the third entry to nest 1.
Astonishingly, bats make up approximately ONE-FIFTH of all mammal species worldwide. They are the only mammals that can fly, and are found on every continent except Antarctica.
Here, rescued fruit bat Colin enjoys a banana.
