Spent years lamenting our lack of good CM options. We go out and sign two good ones who bring different qualities for big money just to see Bentancur forced into the team by RDZ and some lapping it up saying we need a player to start who most deemed not good enough to start.

The duality of Bentancur is something. He’s putting work in off the ball and is secure but he’s killing us with it. I keep hearing he’s been our best CM this season which baffles me. He’s literally not good. He is a massive problem in possession when playing through blocks. We needed two CMs for a reason. Manager needs to start prioritising the players who he and the club have committed huge sums on to play in their actual position and influence this team positively when penetrating the opposition.

What we’ve done to that defence in the summer is exactly how not to build it. We knew we had an injury prone LB and needed someone on his level we were confident to start games with and we decide to get a washed LB on a free knowing the amount of games he’d have to play. Van Hecke was a De Zerbi led signing who fits the requirements on the ball yet struggles against athletic & skilled attackers. He’s had good games but he’s had two HONKING games. We need to address his weaknesses in the summer now with another. We stripped away the CBs with aerial prowess and didn’t replace that capability. Then we sold a versatile fullback with athleticism and replaced him with Archie Gray. Porro injury, while unlucky, is another symptom of poor planning.

De Zerbi needs to stop over complicating the line up and subs. PRIORITISE BALANCE. The style of play is good, the patterns are there in spells. The coaching is gradually seeping through but the game management has to be better. Stop putting square pegs in round holes when it’s not forced by injury both from the 1st XI and the subs
