🇲🇩Yesterday I walked around Tiraspol, Moldova's second largest city, which Chișinău does not control. In the bookshop, portraits of Putin and Stalin hang side by side for sale. Price: 18 rubles 50. In a currency no country recognizes. A field report from Transnistria.🧵 1/12

Dearest Jared, You're making this more difficult than it has to be. Here, have a seat and listen to me carefully. 1) Russia invaded a peaceful nation, a friend of ours, and raped their women, stole their children and took great delight in killing innocent non-combatants. That's bad, very bad, typically frowned upon. 2) The victim has been heroic in its own self-defense and has done so with foreign help that can be best described as underwhelming. They are actually causing damage to Russian infrastructure deep within Russian territory with cutting edge drone technology which is hurting the Russian economy. 3) The dying can stop right this minute, Jared, like right now. Here are the terms that I think any reasonable person would find equitable. 4) Russia turns the fuck around, gets out of Ukraine, agrees to recognize the pre-2014 borders, repatriates Ukrainian children, pays reparations, delivers a leashed and caged Putin to The Hague to face a tribunal, and in return, Ukraine will agree to not kill retreating Russians, release Russian prisoners of war, and not conquer Russian territory as it was pre-2014, as they could if they wanted to because they're currently kicking Russia's ass. t's easy, Jared, that's the only terms that are acceptable. Really, you're making this more difficult than it has to be you worthless Norman Bates look-a-like rodent.
Look at this unelected, corrupt son of a bitch legitimizing the Butcher of Moscow’s demands to claim another country’s territory.

Moldova’s impressive record of EU reforms is paying off. I had a good call with new Prime Minister @Vasile_Tofan during which we discussed the next steps on Moldova’s EU accession path. I also informed the Prime Minister we are now in the final phase to unlock the next payment under the Growth Plan supporting Moldova’s investment agenda. We agreed to continue our discussion at the EU-Moldova Association Council on October 5.

Kobakhidze is the gift that keeps on giving to Moscow. At this stage, why not just surrender it all and make Georgia part of Russia, as the GD government clearly views Georgia as an obedient vassal state anyway.
“#Georgia has decided to revise its history of relations with Moscow and no longer calls it occupation,” Russian state news agency RIA Novosti declared in an article titled “Occupation is cancelled”, referring to recent remarks by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze about the 1783 Treaty of Georgievsk and Georgia’s subsequent incorporation into the Russian Empire. Kobakhidze called the decision a “civilisational choice”, sparking outrage and controversy in Georgian society. jam-news.net/occupation-is-o…

King Harald is dead, and the country🇳🇴 is silent. We do not grieve a distant majesty. We grieve someone we knew. He laughed when he was glad. He wept when life was hard, and he never hid it. He carried these last difficult years the way the rest of us must carry ours. With dignity, but without pretending it came at no cost. Perhaps that is why he felt so close. He showed us that even a king can hurt and struggle. He made us proud. Not because he stood above the people, but because he belonged to us. Those who grieve the most today may be the ones we otherwise notice the least. The Sámi. Queer people. Immigrants. Those who think differently, or live with something that makes the days heavier. To them, Harald said what no king had said as clearly before him, that Norway is their country too. Norway is us. Norway is you. We wanted someone above us. We got someone who stood beside us. Thank you, Harald V.

Vi ville ha noen over oss. Vi fikk en som sto ved siden av oss. Takk, Harald V.

🇲🇩BACK TO THE USSR. New school ritual in Transnistria, Moldova's breakaway region that no one recognizes. From Sept 1, every school week opens with the raising of its hammer-and-sickle flag and its anthem. A thread on indoctrination by decree. 1/6

The timing tells its own story. In February, Chișinău proposed Romanian-language teaching in the region's Moldovan schools from September 1. Tiraspol refused. The flag order takes effect the same day. This is a counter-move in a battle over classrooms. 5/6

Why ritual, why now? Because everything else is failing. GDP down 18%, the gas subsidy gone, the population halved since 1989. When a regime can no longer pay its people, it drills its children. Flags are cheaper than pensions. Watch September 1. 6/6

🇬🇪18 years ago today, Russian tanks rolled into Georgia. The war lasted five days. Its consequences are still unfolding, from Crimea to Bucha. The West's lack of response in Aug 2008 taught Putin the century's most expensive lesson - aggression against neighbors is cost-free 1/9

The playbook is still running. Transnistria today mirrors pre-2008 Abkhazia: passports, "peacekeepers", a protection pretext aimed at Moldova. Hopefully the West have learned by now ... 8/9

The lesson of August 2008 is not about Georgia. It is about deterrence. Russia committed the aggression, but the West made it free of charge. Ukraine is paying that bill today, in blood. Impunity is not neutrality, it is an invitation. Never again means enforcement and consequences.
