RF radiation “should be categorized as carcinogenic to humans (IARC Group 1).
Anthony B. Miller is a Canadian physician-epidemiologist. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health.
Before that he ran the Epidemiology Unit at the National Cancer Institute of Canada, chaired Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics at Toronto, served as a senior epidemiologist at IARC in Lyon, and headed cancer epidemiology at the German Cancer Research Centre.
He sat on IARC working groups that classify carcinogens. From September 2011 to January 2012 he was a visiting senior scientist in IARC’s Monographs program — the period right after radiofrequency fields were put in Group 2B.
That 2011 call is the one people mean by “Class II B”: possibly carcinogenic to humans, based mainly on limited human evidence for glioma and acoustic neuroma in heavy phone users.
Miller’s later position is that the evidence that arrived after 2011 is enough to move RF out of 2B.
In 2015 he and co-authors argued for Group 2A (probable). In 2018, in Environmental Research, he, Lloyd Morgan, Iris Udasin, and Devra Davis reviewed the post-2011 epidemiology plus the new animal data and wrote that RF radiation “should be categorized as carcinogenic to humans (IARC Group 1).”
Group 1 is IARC’s top bin — the same one as tobacco smoke, asbestos, and ionizing radiation. It is used when there is sufficient evidence in humans, or a combination of animal evidence plus a relevant mechanism.
In a 2020 statement on 5G he said it again in plain language: if IARC re-evaluated the 2011 classification on the accumulated evidence, “it would be categorized as Group 1.”
He used that to argue for ALARA — reduce exposure as low as reasonably achievable, the same posture health agencies already use for X-rays.

Japan is working on flex film solar as well - wrap sign posts and buildings with it
France ordered big businesses to cover their parking lots in solar panels, and the businesses are embracing it.
Carrefour is putting solar canopies over 350 of its store lots, 180,000 parking spaces, and using the power to run its supermarkets.
Disneyland Paris started even earlier: its guest lot now has more than 80,000 panels over 11,200 spaces, producing about 17% of the resort's electricity.
France passed the law in 2023 requiring most large outdoor parking lots to put renewable-energy canopies or other qualifying shade over at least half the lot.
Many businesses don't pay a cent upfront.
Carrefour isn't even fronting the construction cost. GreenYellow is financing the entire installation and operating it under a 20-year power agreement. Carrefour uses the electricity and says the project will significantly reduce its energy bills.
The government estimates it could add up to 11 gigawatts of solar. In full sun, that's about as much as 10 nuclear reactors.
The US has somewhere between 700 million and 2 billion parking spaces. Most of them are bare asphalt baking in the sun.
Why aren't we doing more of this?

🦔Someone is buying Japanese used books by the ton. Not novels or comics. Philosophy, history, medical law, Edo-period cultural texts. Multiple buyer accounts all ship to one logistics center in Okayama Prefecture that won't answer questions. Export records show over 50 tons, roughly 100,000 volumes, shipped to the US since last year. No buyer has been identified.
Separately, court documents confirmed Anthropic's "Project Panama" bought millions of books in the US, cut the spines off, scanned them, and shredded the originals. An internal memo said the goal was to "destructively scan all the books in the world." Similar operations have been reported across Europe.
My Take
Anthropic's US book operation came out in court filings earlier this year. Project Panama. Millions of books, cut the spines off, scanned, shredded. Their VP chose the codename so nobody outside the company would find out. That story broke and apparently the same operation just moved to Japan. Anonymous buyer accounts, a warehouse in Okayama that won't take questions, and 100,000 volumes of specialized academic texts that nobody buys to resell.
I don't know how you build a trillion-dollar industry on material you had to acquire in secret through middlemen because you knew the public would object. Authors spent years on those books and now they're fed through a scanner and thrown away so a chatbot can sound smarter. If the data was free to use, they wouldn't need codenames and anonymous warehouses. The lawsuits over who owns this material have barely begun and I think the copyright exposure across the whole AI industry is enormous. Anthropic's internal memo said the goal was every book in the world, which describes the foundation of the product.
