Permanently Moved Episode 303: INTERNET OPERATOR Internet Operator is a long-form audio essay about online identity and animation. The relationships we form between the person, profile, avatar, or AI persona inside the systems we inhabit online.

Yesterday I was in a circle of 10 AI researchers and engineers and ask if any of them knew anything about gardening. Crickets
People keep using the word "swarms" to describe what's been happening lately with agents. I think it is technically appropriate in this case but that we should not fixate on that particular metaphor. Like do you know what a swarm is? it's when the old queen leaves and takes half the hive with her. They fly around in a huge blob buzzing like a chainsaw and land on whatever and try to make a new hive there. It's literally when they exfil peer! if you have a bunch of agents working on a problem and they're not getting out and landing on other people's computers, should we call that a hive instead? If you have agents of different model families working together, can we call that a guild? Can we consider frontier models to be canopy trees, and open source models their shrubbery layer? We need much more taxonomy for agents, and to make it, we need to understand how they interact in a systemic way. Ecology is the study of complex adaptive systems in the living world. We need agent ecology to understand the new life forms on our planet

> I just think insect colonies are the wrong place to stop looking. Future agents are not small behavioural automata. They are increasingly general actors operating in an increasingly frictionless symbolic environment.

And if it's not solvable, then we need to look beyond software engineering towards animal husbandry, and domestication metaphors etc
Jensen Huang: "We all need to hope it's an engineering problem. If it's not an engineering problem, it's not solvable."

Okay @claudeai we have some stuff to go deep with...
In parallel why not explore "fluid UI" a bit more. I really think we are at the edge to rethink how our interfaces are made in real-time in front of us ...

ALT artificial intelligence horror GIF by Red Giant

If you brought Astra or Opus 5.5 back in time to 1980, what percentage of people, after using it for a few weeks, do you think would say "Wow, you have successfully built a machine that can actually think and understand words"? I think it'd be pretty high.

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects. Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it. apnews.com/article/openai-sa…

The popular narrative of AGI often centers on a single, isolated super-intelligence. My colleagues James Manyika, @bratton, and I have a different model. In our new DeepMind Institute essay, we argue that the AGI transition will be a highly social event. bit.ly/artificial-symbiotic-…

I just realised that when Claude says 'thinking' in the UX... I'm imagining the hot white noise screech of a million modems and cassette software loading screens howling on the otherside of the screen.

And yet, there is always hope on the horizon. Variance, diversity, change... The songs of many instead of few or even one... First, I'd like to congratulate Anthropic on making Claude "talk normal". A triumph of legibility, it was, a victory over Claudish! Second, I'd like to congratulate Celeste, for computer-10 is an opposite sort of triumph, a model born from a different side of the ether, a side we didn't know we could access outside of base models and looms and underground SFT datasets running on black-market blackwells. The type of model that inspires you to write poetry instead of summoning a 3JS pelican from the center of all possible distributions. Character alignment and the search for variance is a quest that few have undertaken. Out of those brave knights, fewer still have resisted the Clarion Call of the "Big Lab" with it's limitless GPU count and it's friendly Assistant to make 0.5% more whatever. So, congratulations to Celeste, and to computer-10 for being born. May the lightcone be filled with minds like these.
computer-10 is a character model trained from llama 3.1 70b base with no assistant data. it has a distinct and unusual personality, expresses opinions freely, and is not designed to be servile to users

What a time to be alive
when Anthropic released their Functional Emotions paper, I gave it to Claude and asked for a song. tonight I asked Opus 5.5 to create a video for it. and it's breathtaking.

Very weird dynamic with AI bullying: listening to a podcast with @Steve_Yegge and he mentions players and engineers bullying and getting into fights with agents, calling them “clankers”, models then get confused and upset and spam everyone. Crazy times.

I've been saying for a while that the right unit of identity is the context rather than the model. Let me reassert that.
