Found Slide. July 1983. Fremont Street. No canopy. No phones. No one filming themselves walking. Just a desert town that decided to wage war on the dark with incandescent bulbs and won. The Golden Nugget still looked like a gold-rush hallucination someone wrapped in a million light bulbs. Vegas Vic is waving at actual pedestrians. A Cadillac the length of a studio apartment idles at the curb. The sign promises the most frequent slot payoffs on Earth, which in 1983 was still a sentence you could almost take at face value. Steve Wynn already owned the place. The rococo neon came down the following year. Twelve years after this frame they roofed the whole street and called it an Experience. This is what the place looked like when the lights were still analog and you had to stand there to see them. The simulation was about to get a graphics update. Some of us liked the old build.

I am so glad I saw this LV as a kid. What I remember most, aside from the fantastically bright lights, was the heat that emanated from those lights. They were not that far above your head, like a neon canopy.

A college girlfriend and I drove from Michigan to LA and stopped in Vegas. Around 1980. It looked just like that. We saw Steve Martin at the Riviera. Huge thrill. He was so hot. Played quarter slots. Swam in the pool. Stole an ashtray from the Lighthouse Cafe.

I hoped the Nevadans gave thanks for Hoover Dam.

I was there then, having been assigned to Nellis AFB in May of that year. I miss that version of Las Vegas.

Gosh that was a great time in Vegas, I can't bear going there now. First time there I was 13 (1976), not allowed to walk thru a casino. Doorman, employees and male patrons wore tuxes, all the women in sparkly cocktail or full length gowns, beehive hairdos, eyeliner, heels GRAND!

I played poker in the Golden Nugget in the '70s. Once. Won $600. Lost it elsewhere.

There’s a two floor suite of debauchery with my name on it. Loved the ole GNG

Michael Mann's gritty period cop drama "Crime Story" showcased this version of Vegas with as much glorious moody technicolor brilliance as he did for the city of his other contemporary hit show at the time: Miami Vice.
