it's 7am and I'm getting much more birthday wishes than last few years already I really wonder if it's indicative of my year or just social media being a snitch :D

Finally thank you to the city of San Francisco and the Bay Area for being welcoming even as I struggled desperately And for being so fucking demanding of me in ways that forced me to grow so much even though I've only been here for 8 MONTHS!

Being in SF this week has made me realize how underappreciated Biotech really is, two large events, Substack debate and Hamilton society have a Biotech focus yet very few founders and VCs I meet at all the parties and events working on/investing in Biotech. The technology is there and its in the zeitgeist and people care about it and it is obviously going to have a massive impact on our future There is so much alpha in Biotech right now, especially compared to AI, on the founder and VC side its insane how its not being exploited

what about Fleishhacker Pool? the former largest salt water swimming pool in the US, right by the same Ocean Beach Herbert Fleishhacker was also behind Coit Tower and SF Zoo
Sutro Baths used to be an Oasis for the people of San Francisco I dream of helping it return to its glory There is so much capital in this city Investing it in common spaces Would be legendary

To all my billionaire followers, imagine: If you rebuilt the sutro baths. You could stand right here, wearing a double-breasted suit and sneakers, watching the peasants as they bathe
Didn't realize just how epic the original Sutro Baths were until people started posting photos. The world is a museum of passion projects.

discussions of artificial intelligence tend to underestimate how much humanity can still transcend - the limits of biology, cybernetics, and group intelligence remain far over the horizon

Is there a single group advocating for space exploration as a unifying ideal for the human race? Even corporate attempts to care seem consistently focused on asteroid mining. Have we forgotten that there are habitable planets out there? Have we forgotten how to dream?

Replying to @NathanpmYoung
If you've heard of someone, that means they won a game (getting famous enough that people like you know of them) that millions of people would really love to win, but could not figure out how to. The celebrities, authors, politicians, influencers you hate are NOT talentless - much the opposite. Maybe their talents or their ideas are very misaligned with the type of talent or ideas that improve the world - often true - but that's a different argument.

felt this in the air for the 2 years I’ve been here what do you think?
Two conversations this weekend make me think that there's a vibe shift afoot in Silicon Valley around what one should work on and what is worthwhile. Culturally, it feels like the moment is ripe for new frameworks: • Davos expert morality is stale and discredited. • It's also apparent that the "just be super based" Counter-Enlightenment is not really an answer. (Yes, woke went too far, but simply inverting it doesn't work.) • EA is no longer the automatic default for smart people. • There's increasing skepticism of slot and slop machine dynamics. Overall, "what is worthy and valuable?" feels like it's becoming more central.

@elonmusk I think you should consider that making X a global totem pole for Free Speech, and then turning it into a death star laser for coordinated hate sessions, is actually harmful for the cause of free speech. I'm seriously worried that huge backlashes against values I hold dear are coming in a few years' time.
