A handful of corporations controlling online discourse is a serious threat to society, potentially even an existential threat to human civilization. It distorts how ideas spread, how consensus forms, and ultimately what people believe.

These two didn't take off because they shipped Twitter with worse UX and a company still in charge, so nobody had a reason to switch. Decentralization matters when it gives users something a company can't: an unstoppable network nobody can buy, shut down or rewrite the rules of.
One thing people need to realize is that, unfortunately, decentralized social networks haven't worked yet. That's the truth. Farcaster's interactions dropped by 90% after @dwr sold it, down to fewer than 3,000 posts a day. Lens has never really taken off and has been consistently declining, also hovering around a few thousand interactions a day. I really love these innovations and have always been an early adopter of both, but so far, they've failed. There are, unironically, Telegram groups with more engagement than these platforms. So having someone like @balajis spending time and money trying to make the protocol useful and help it grow is really awesome. Web3 people really love to engage in these philosophical debates about decentralization, but if no one uses it, it doesn't matter whether it's decentralized or not. It's just LARPing. Farcaster was dead, and now it's got another shot. If you're enthusiastic about decentralized social networks, take advantage of this moment. Join NS or another client and use the momentum to your advantage.

A founder's job is building something the dumbest guy and the smartest guy both love, then selling it to the masses in between. Basically Geoffrey Moore's crossing the chasm. For Bitsocial: - smartest: truly decentralized; - dumbest: it just works; - masses: make money with it.

Lens Chain has a centralized operator that can refuse your transactions (l2beat: stage 0), and apps read posts and reactions through the Lens API. Same problem as all onchain social: every action costs gas, users don't run full nodes, everyone reads through someone's API.
lens today remains 100% focused on the same core vision we had in 2022. it all started with this: Lens Protocol Open Letter Social media platforms have created communities and allowed voices to be heard that might otherwise have been silenced. They have given us the power to connect across continents and oceans. But these platforms are centralized. They own our data. They control our monetization. They dictate our algorithmic distribution. It’s time to build a better way. The Lens Protocol is a decentralized, open-source social graph that returns control of information and links to the people. It allows content creators to own their digital roots and enables individuals to fully possess their connections with their communities. By signing this letter, you support a future where: 1. Creators own their content and distribution. 2. Users own their social graph and data. 3. Developers have open access to build innovative social experiences without the risk of being de-platformed. Let's build a new internet together.

Innovative work by @rinse12: Bitsocial communities can now install their own custom feed sort from npm. The first one is the old 4chan rule: a reply that just says "sage" doesn't bump the thread. I added support for it in 5chan, shipping next release (v0.10.1).

.@balajis put up a bounty for the easiest way to run your own Farcaster node and client. Selfhosting, no API keys. The best attempt starts by syncing a 470GB snapshot. That's what it costs when every node stores the whole network. A Bitsocial full node runs on a Raspberry Pi.
balaji put up a bounty for the easiest way to run your own farcaster node + client so I'm building it in public: 3 commands, no API keys, nobody's permission node's syncing right now (470gb snapshot) looking for a few people to test it this week sats100m.github.io/farcaster… @balajis

idk if anyone still codes or understands what AI is doing out there, but if you do, check out this new site I made: hooks.bitsocial.net it's the React library @5chanapp and @getseedit are built on, so you can build your own decentralized social app on Bitsocial. and if you don't, it has full docs and llms.txt so your AI agent can build it for you.

So… what if AI made quantum computers happen way earlier than expected? Say, in a few years? Because Bitcoin isn't ready for that. Taproot took ~4 years to activate. Post-quantum needs a soft fork plus millions of people moving their coins. The proposal is still a draft… $BTC

Back in 2015 I got obsessed with Elon and told friends & family he would become the richest, e.g. the starlink announcement blew my mind. 2016-17 I wouldn't stop talking about the AI-AGI-ASI kurzweil progression, OpenAI saving humanity (🙃) I was too young and broke to buy TSLA.
Sure sex is cool but have you ever tried making a big prediction about the future and then been correct? Basically a continuous orgasm
