What they earn for their daily duties is NOT even a pittance. There is no health cover, no help for children’s education, no pension. Still they loyally remain at their respective temples guarding our traditions and dharma. They light the lamps, perform simple but regular poojas, and hold the line for our temple culture. The Thanjavur Maratha king Raja Serfoji II, whose birth anniversary is celebrated today, was a multi-faceted personality. I had earlier written about his immense contribution to the restoration and renovation of the Thanjavur Rajarajeswaram Temple. Here is another fascinating aspect of his life. The Modi records preserved in the Saraswathi Mahal Library in Thanjavur reveal his deep interest in medicine, particularly Siddha, Ayurveda and Unani systems. He established the Dhanvantari Mahal, where medicines based on Siddha, Ayurveda and Unani traditions were prepared. He also maintained herbal gardens. Several works dealing with diseases and their treatment were compiled during his period, an important one being the “Sarabhendra Vaidhya Muraigal,” which deals with various ailments and their treatment. His interest in ophthalmology is particularly fascinating. Documentary evidence survives showing the treatment of cataract, corneal ulcers, eye infections and other ophthalmic conditions. Cataract operations were also performed. What is remarkable is the integration of Indian and European systems of medicine. The records mention treatments such as castor oil, rhubarb powder, an indigenous “blue pill” and leech therapy, while European medicines included silver nitrate, belladonna solution and other preparations. The records were remarkably systematic: diagnosis, medicines administered, surgical procedures and even the patient’s post-treatment vision were carefully documented. The contributions of Maharaja Serfoji II constitute an extraordinary chapter in the medical history of India.

India’s ethanol-blending programme has expanded at breakneck speed, from under 1.5% in 2013-14 to 20% in 2025-26, five years ahead of target. Ethanol procurement by oil marketing companies is projected to exceed 1,200 crore litres, up from just 38 crore litres a decade ago. The government frames E20 as a win for energy security, farmer incomes and foreign-exchange savings. But a closer look reveals a more complicated picture. Much of India’s ethanol comes from sugarcane, molasses, maize and rice, commodities that also feed people and livestock. As distilleries compete for these feedstocks, the question shifts from whether ethanol can cut the oil-import bill to whether those savings justify the inflationary costs of diverting food into fuel. Maize is currently emerging as the key battleground. Ethanol demand has grown at roughly 38% annually, while maize production rose just 11.4%. Since maize makes up 55-65% of broiler feed, higher ethanol demand can push up poultry-feed costs, which eventually reach consumers through egg and chicken prices. Egg prices have already climbed 35-40% over the past year. India, once a maize exporter, briefly became a net importer in 2024. The E20 programme is not just an energy policy, it is an agricultural policy with far-reaching consequences. I had had enough of the misfits and frauds in the TN Govt and in the @tnhrcedept continuously vandalizing the ancient sculptures, Mandapams, inscriptions, Gopurams, Pillars and murals of the extraordinarily important Heritage Temple of Sri Arunachaleswarar Temple in Tiruvannamalai. Today I have issued a pre-litigation legal notice-cum-representation to the Director General, @ASIGoI and the Ministry of Culture - seeking a fresh notification of Sri Arunachaleswarar Temple, Tiruvannamalai under Section 4 of the AMASR Act, 1958 as a Monument of National Importance. Earliest stone records in the temple complex go back to Chola King Aditya I (c. 885–890 CE). Of the 360 inscriptions here — about 180 of them Chola. One 9th-century inscription was later found in damaged condition under the floor of the third prakara. That is what “tiruppani” by @tnhrcedept mifits lacking scholarship does: it buries primary evidence. It is high time the vandalism of this temple’s heritage is halted by @mygovindia UNESCO’s 2017 mission already recorded (a) guest houses, and toilets in the fourth and fifth prakaras abutting historic fabric; (b) conversion of Puravi Mandapam into office space in breach of a High Court order; (c) debris on the west gopuram’s adhisthana; (d) a bruised Dwarapalika; and a flood of unnecessary civil works - for paint, paving, RCC and barricading — without a monument-wide conservation plan. National importance by Union Government will be the only legal lock that binds conservation to a published standard - a standard to halt successive moronic officers, contractors from poring “amenities” into historic prakaras. I have called upon @ASIGoI to inspect, document, place the proposal before the Technical Evaluation Committee, issue a confined Section 4(1) notice, and meanwhile restrain irreversible modern civil works. Copies marked to Tiruvannamalai Corporation, District Collector, TN Archaeology, HR&CE and ASI Chennai Circle. Pious Worship will continue. Vandalism should not. This wholly illegal Government Order No. 85 and which is totally against the interest of Hindu Temples was brought by DMK regime just before Assembly elections were announced in Tamil Nadu early this year. Many of us are aware that @tnhrcedept has left many temple properties with encroachers, with Salvation Army Church in Purasawakkam, Chennai, with a mosque in Srivanjiyam, with minorities in Vedaranyam and so on.... The Hindu Religious Institutions Audit Department has gone one step ahead - They have stated that the famous ancient temple of Sri Jambukeswarar adjacent to Srirangam and Tiruchirappalli - belongs to Trivandrum in Kerala - (if only this temple is as clean as Kerala Temples 🥲) The Audit Department and the @tnhrcedept deserve each other !
