It is absolutely sad to see the great Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple struggling to perform the daily Abhishekam because there is no water in the Simhakeni, the temple well. This is the historic Simhakeni associated with the Ganga water brought by Rajendra Chola, while the distinctive lion-shaped structure seen today was constructed during the Udayarpalayam period. The Sivachariyar also says that even the lighting of lamps in the temple is facing difficulties. How unimaginable this would have been to the Cholas, who instituted the remarkable system of “Savaa Moova Peradu”to ensure that perpetual lamps continued to burn in their temples, to see one of their greatest temples finding it difficult to light lamps. What nonsense is this ? This is one of the beautiful rock cut cave temples in India, the Badami caves. Why such a holy place is used here ?
