Justin Verlander has played 21 seasons in the majors. His final start was today. After 5⅓ innings, manager A.J. Hinch came out to take him out, then pointed to the stands. Genevieve, his 7-year-old daughter, sprinted onto the field in his jersey, ran to the mound, and hugged him. He started shaking and crying. He had no idea it was coming. Then he walked off holding her hand.❤️ His wife Kate and their little boy Bellamy (1) met them at the dugout.

OL Public Service Announcement When I created OL Masterminds over a decade ago, the purpose was simple: elevate, educate, empower, and highlight the offensive line position through collaboration. I believed then, as I do now, that no position in sports better represents what true unity is supposed to look like. An offensive line is made up of five individuals with different bodies, backgrounds, experiences, strengths, and responsibilities. Each player sees the game from a slightly different vantage point, but for the unit to function, all five must ultimately see it through one lens. Their success depends on communication, trust, accountability, and a willingness to put the mission ahead of the individual. Unfortunately, the offensive line coaching and development community has become increasingly fractured. Too much of the conversation is now driven by ego, agendas, tribalism, and the need to prove that one philosophy is superior to every other. “If you don’t teach it my way, you’re wrong.” “If you don’t belong to our group, you don’t understand football.” That mindset is not leadership. It is insecurity. Much like the current political landscape in America, we have allowed disagreement to become division. We have confused having strong convictions with needing everyone else’s convictions to be wrong. Instead of exchanging ideas, challenging one another, and learning through honest collaboration, too many people retreat into tribes where agreement is rewarded and different perspectives are treated as threats. Here is the news flash: study 160 offensive linemen in the NFL and you will see 160 different expressions of the position. Study college football and you will find countless techniques, systems, body types, and approaches succeeding at a high level. There are absolutely foundational principles that transcend eras, systems, and philosophies. Posture, balance, leverage, timing, vision, communication, and strain will always matter. Those principles create the foundation, but they do not require everyone to build the exact same house. Bruce Lee said, “Using no way as way; having no limitation as limitation.” He also reminded us to “be water.” Water adapts without losing its identity. It responds to the environment in front of it. It can move around an obstacle, flow through an opening, or meet force with force. That does not mean having no standards or convictions. It means refusing to become so rigid that you can no longer learn, adjust, or recognize truth when it arrives in a form different from your own. The offensive line should be the group that reminds football, and perhaps America, what unity actually looks like. Unity is not uniformity. It does not require five people to think exactly alike, come from the same place, or solve every problem the same way. It requires them to align around a shared purpose. It means communicating through disagreement, putting the mission ahead of personal recognition, and understanding that individual success is directly connected to the person beside you. On the offensive line, you cover for one another. You accept accountability when you are wrong. You solve problems together. You do your job with the understanding that someone else’s livelihood, health, and success may depend on it. Ego cannot be allowed to destroy the unit because the moment one person decides he is more important than the five, the entire operation becomes vulnerable. It’s a lesson that extends well beyond football. We do not have to come from the same place, look the same, teach the same techniques, vote the same way, worship the same way, or live identical lives. But we must remain capable of respecting one another, finding common ground, and working toward something greater than ourselves. We should be able to compete without tearing each other down. We should be able to disagree without becoming enemies. We should be able to protect our principles without losing our humanity. 1/2

No athlete would intentionally hire a coach who consistently undermined their confidence and kept them from reaching their full potential. Yet plenty of athletes have an “inner coach” doing exactly that. Training your mental game starts with becoming a better coach to yourself.
