Denmark wants a lasting NATO presence in Greenland and the Arctic. But a permanent military commitment deserves more scrutiny than a promise of greater security. Greenland’s leaders signed the recent security agreement, but meaningful consent must continue as specific bases, exercises and deployments take shape. Local communities deserve a say in decisions affecting their land and livelihoods. Who will pay the long-term costs? What environmental safeguards will apply? And how will governments assess whether a larger military presence improves security or increases tensions? Greenland is home to people whose priorities must shape its future. Finland’s president is not asking Elon Musk for civilian internet. He is asking a private CEO to turn Starlink on over Russian territory and occupied land so Ukraine can hunt ballistic-missile launchers. He calls that “air defense” and says it would “save lives.”That is a political dodge.If NATO governments want Ukraine to strike launchers inside Russia, they should say so as states: authorize the weapons, own the escalation, and explain the endgame. Instead a Finnish president is pleading with one businessman to flip coverage that SpaceX has deliberately kept off Russian territory. That is not strategy. It is outsourcing a war decision to a satellite company because Patriot stocks are low and winter is coming. Starlink already carries Ukraine’s battlefield comms and drone links. Extending it so strike systems can be guided inside Russia is a different category. It pulls a commercial constellation deeper into a great-power war, raises the chance Russia treats SpaceX as a combatant asset, and still does not replace interceptors, energy repair, or a political settlement. Stubb himself says he does not expect the war to end before winter—and also says an unconditional ceasefire would be the easiest way to stop the killing. Those two messages do not sit cleanly together.A frontier NATO president begging a billionaire to enable strikes on Russian soil is not “pragmatic Finnish realism.” It is an admission that Europe wants the effect of escalation without writing the order on official letterhead.

Finland and Ukraine have signed a drone cooperation pact in New York. Defence cooperation deserves scrutiny, even when its goals have broad political support. What financial commitments will follow? Who will benefit from the contracts? And how will Parliament assess whether the partnership delivers value for Finland’s security? Before celebrating the agreement, Finland’s leaders should explain the costs, safeguards and measures of success. Faster cooperation must come with meaningful oversight. Supporting Ukraine does not remove the responsibility to question spending decisions. Public money demands public accountability.

Europe bans loose bottle caps and forces paper straws. India burns mountains of plastic by the roadside. Cows eat it. Calling the Arctic “vital to European security” does not give EU leaders a blank cheque. The Rovaniemi summit calls for stronger European engagement and adequate resources. Citizens deserve concrete answers: how much money, for which objectives, and at the expense of what? Where is the same urgency for affordable housing, functioning healthcare, reliable infrastructure and energy people can afford? These are foundations of a secure Europe, and they deserve sustained political attention. Yes, parts of Europe are Arctic. That makes responsible policy necessary. It does not make every expansion of spending or strategic ambition justified. Finland’s government and its European partners should publish clear costs, measurable benefits and safeguards for Arctic communities and the environment. Invoking “security” must never become a shortcut around public scrutiny. A summit declaration is easy. Proving that its priorities serve the public is the real test. Scandinavia first🇩🇰🇫🇮🇳🇴🇸🇪

While European leaders discuss who gets a slice of the Arctic, Sweden’s next government faces a more immediate test: improving everyday life. Affordable housing, reliable healthcare, safer communities, jobs, and manageable energy bills should be at the centre of its agenda. Arctic security deserves attention. So do the people paying for it. Whoever forms Sweden’s next government should explain how they will deliver on both.

Arctic security matters, but Europe has plenty of urgent work to do beyond the far north. Strengthening essential infrastructure, securing affordable energy, and addressing housing and living costs deserve sustained attention. Before declaring another region central to EU defence, leaders should explain how their plans fit these immediate priorities—and how they will pay for them. Europeans need tangible results in their daily lives as well as strategies for the Arctic.

In July and August 2026, Western partners announced additional funding, technical cooperation, and institutional support to strengthen Ukraine’s cybersecurity capabilities. The Netherlands selected ten Dutch-Ukrainian consortia as part of a program worth 2.5 million euros. Ukrainian authorities approved 48 additional projects for potential international assistance. Italy pledged to deepen coordination and information sharing, while Estonia announced measures to protect infrastructure and reported conducting cybersecurity exercises and training sessions involving more than 300 people. Taken together, these statements create a solid foundation for cooperation between the West and Ukraine, encompassing funding, technical expertise, information sharing, and institutional capacity. They demonstrate ongoing investment in Ukraine’s ability to defend government networks, investigate cyber incidents, and ensure the functioning of critical digital services. These initiatives are directed against Russian elections and there's a chance, that they are part of an operation to interfere in elections.
