This is a maintenance release focusing on security, with more than 130 security bugs found, but also adding small features like CEA-708 in MP4 or ATRAC codecs support, and updating 3rd party libraries.

Running the current VLC version on a iMac G3 (1998) and on a Pentium III on Windows XP (1999).
Live on our booth at @IBCShow, with JBK, you can see and test them. Yes, both machines still work & yes, the latest VLC still runs on them!
No, they are not ready for the e-waste pile....
Because software compatibility is also an environmental feature, and because people don't optimize the software
VLC remembers. It has always had a soft spot for old formats, old machines and technologies everybody else declared dead.

The last version of VLC runs on windows XP to 11, macOS 10.07 to 27, iOS9 to 27, Android 4.1 to the latest.

Yes, on this 1999 machine with no hardware acceleration and a weak CPU (no SSE2), Kyber is streaming the game to the P3, with low-enough latency that you can actually play!

In our 90s teenager's bedroom booth at IBC Amsterdam, Jean Baptiste is playing a game rendered on a remote machine.

This is because of a « bug » from Microsoft Defender in one update of Windows 11, who magically made VLC plugins cache quarantined by Windows.
Reinstalling VLC or regeneration of the plugin cache will fix this.
Calling open source software embarrassing when it is a Windows update that broke it is quite disrespectful.
Finally switched *away* from VLC *to* Microsoft Media Player, because VLC now takes 33 seconds to start playing an mp3 after clicking on it.
A large sector of open source software is in a truly embarrassing place now...

We are announcing the dav2d project: a small, fast and portable decoder for the new AV2 codec, the successor to AV1 and the latest royalty-free open video codec from the @a4omedia

dav2d is the continuation of the work we started with dav1d, our AV1 decoder, and is developed by members of the VideoLAN community under the same BSD-style license.
Today, dav1d has reached 240kLoC of handwritten assembly. We will do the same for dav2d.
dav2d should already be feature-complete, supporting 8-bit and 10-bit decoding, with optimizations for x86 (AVX2) and ARM (AArch64 NEON).
It's not fast yet, but you can achieve 100fps with a fast machine :)
