Thank god we don’t have PR. The only thing worse than a Labour government is a traffic light coalition. Imagine the Greens in government

You regular reminder that Tim Stanley, a former chairman of the Cambridge University Labour Party & former Labour parliamentary candidate is in no way a conservative. LARP-ing as a character from an Evelyn Waugh & wearing tweed doesn't make you a conservative.
He may be proud the UK is run by minorities and “ain’t going back,” but that attitude is what will stop there being unity on the right. Many Tories don’t think ethnicity/culture matter, but mass migration they also didn’t think mattered not so long ago means *those* issues “ain’t going back,” either.

Yes and its for this reason we aren’t voting our way out of this We have a critical mass of the electorate who are now dependent on the state and think that the productive in society are the problem. Atlas Shrugged
I think the reason why many people think 100k PA in the uk is rich, is because they are on £40k but don’t realise that they pay very little tax and live off a lot of subsidies and benefits and live in relatively affordable areas. So they think being on 100k is like being 2.5x better off. But when you earn 100k+ the tax goes up and you lose all the benefits, plus in order to earn that, you have to live in an area where housing and living costs are double as well.

People keep pointing to a disaster that wasn’t caused by cutting of regulations to show why cutting of regulations is bad.

We can get 350,000 extra childcare places in England at virtually no additional cost if we just relax staff ratios to the level used in the Netherlands.
Intervention spiral: regulate childcare -> drive up costs -> subsidise it -> means test subsidy leading to punitive marginal rates -> withdraw means test etc Never tackle the root causes of the problem.

Not going to happen. We do not have a stock of dollar debt that requires servicing - we did in 76, which is why we needed foreign dollars. Right now not only do we not have foreign liabilities but we also hold sizeable foreign exchange reserves. We also have a floating currency so we are not defending any peg - again in 76 that wasn't the case. We are sovereign, independent and set our own rate. What will happen is gilts and inflation are going to blow up at the same time, which will make a mockery of the budget and is going to be extremely painful for consumers and businesses. The bofe is going to struggle with what is coming next year as is the treasury, but it's not going to lead to a bailout, it's just going to make people poorer.

We can but hope. Then pensions next
What makes British politics so high stakes at the moment is the Right is systematically building the case to dismantle a large swathe of Britain’s welfare state non-pensioners.

"War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength"
Emmanuel Macron says American free speech is "the opposite of free speech." In his view, freedom only exists inside a "common framework" set by the state. He compared posting an insult online to hitting someone in the street. Those are different things, because one is speech and the other is violence. He wants people punished for posting "nonsense," with state-backed fact-checkers deciding what qualifies. He wants a verified identity behind every social media account. He has written to Ursula von der Leyen demanding the DSA be enforced "much faster, much more forcefully." reclaimthenet.org/macron-urg…

I suppose it matters if you consider these a success. Many would. Drinking water has improved from 99% to 99.96%. Low pressure has dropped from 2% to 0.001%. Unplanned outages have dropped from 0.4% to 0.003%. Leaks have dropped from 4980ml/d to less than 2900. Household metering has gone from zero to 60% leading to drops in consumption. Properties at risk of sewage flooding have dropped from 32,000 to 3000. Bathing water standards have risen from 27% pass rate to 96%. A 3rd of complaints were not answered within 10 days, now it's 0.4% for 5 days. Water pollutants such as BOD, ammonia, and orthophosphates are massively down and at all time lows. These are all sewage indicators. Other pollutants such as cadmium, lead, nickel, copper and zinc tell the same story. On top of all that we outperform the nationalised systems of Wales and Scotland and the NFP system of Wales. All with similar levels of debt per capita.

I really don’t understand why people enjoy football. It’s a second rate sport compared to rugby or cricket. Mind you, people enjoy watching darts or cycling…
Football tops almost every European country, except basketball in Lithuania and ice hockey in Latvia.

If only they had spent more on youth clubs
So Kemi Badenoch wants to pay for new prison cells by cutting £1bn from culture, media and sport? That means youth clubs, leisure centres, sports pitches, arts projects and music venues, places that give young people somewhere to go and learn teamwork and self discipline, all of that: gone. That’s not tough on crime, that’s building a pipeline into the very prisons you're promising! And this from a party that added fewer than 500 prison places in a decade, and left communities like mine fighting to keep leisure centres open in the first place. Disgraceful.
