In 1793 Paris, the Jacobins reign of terror was starting to get underway under their leader Marat who was calling for the deaths of hundreds of thousands.
From Normandy, Charlotte Corday, packed her Plutarch Lives, and set out to Paris to kill Marat. She plunged a dagger into his heart sat in the bath to sooth an agonizing skin condition.
Corday was unapologetic. In court, she said had gladly given her life to save thousands. She was sentenced to the guillotine, but before she went to her execution both calmly and proudly, she asked to have her portrait drawn, and the jailer complied.

As a devout atheist, it is still hard not to believe in the the goddess Tyche.
She acts with such regularity and with such precision, it’s difficult to attribute to statistical chance.
