Last night (Sep 26, ~21:00Z or 1 AM local), unusually intense explosions were reported coming from Hormuz, offshore.
The IRGC claims to have hit multiple commercial ships. US officials claim that no ships have been hit in the past 2 days.
Approx. 5-6 hours after the reported explosions (02:14Z), Sentinel-1 passed over Hormuz. The data shows ZERO new immobilized vessels.
Furthermore, no fires have been detected by VIIRS/DNB (see QT).
Thus, the evidence so far suggests that the IRGC launched an intense attack -- possibly using a combination of missiles, drones, and boats (speculation) -- which were intercepted, explaining the reported explosions. Either no ships were hit or the damage was too minor to cause a detectable fire or to immobilize any vessel.
At around the same time that reports of explosions were being reported, NOAA-20 was passing over Hormuz (09-26, 21:12Z). The data has been uploaded to FIRMS, but no hotspot in the strait was detected.
So we can say that no fire hot enough to be detected was happening at that time.
Two more VIIRS satellites passed over in the subsequent ~1 hour. We shall see if anything flared up in the interval once their data is also uploaded.
