Those Third World extractive elites: The Sierra Leone elite is paid by a drug gang to be a transit hub for cocaine.
The man who bought Sierra Leone. Jos Leijdekkers’s is one of Europe’s most wanted criminals. His greatest caper yet looks to be the takeover of a country. In half a decade Leijdekkers has turned Sierra Leone, a place previously best known for blood diamonds, into a hub for billions of dollars’ worth of Colombian cocaine, disguised as rice or plantain chips, which pass through each year en route to Europe. By funnelling a share of the profits to Sierra Leone’s political elite and funding large parts of the state itself, Leijdekkers has amassed perks that would be the envy of a Bond villain. He is believed to have a Sierra Leonean diplomatic passport. The police and military establishment bow to him, squadrons of container ships and submarines ply the shores at his command, and he is escorted in a motorcade by the presidential guard beneath a cloud of drones economist.com/interactive/18…

How much does it cost to buy the elite of a small third world country? Genuinely interested, not "asking for a friend".

Third Worldism: America, NATO, and Israel bad. Hamas and Russia victims. Ukraine not a real victim.
UN RAPPORTEUR: “WE NEED TO STOP SENDING WEAPONS TO UKRAINE” Russia invaded Ukraine, but “there are a number of reasons that led to that war...” She accuses “NATO led by the United States” of “a political calculation to have a weak Europe. . .That’s why that front remains open.”

Ethiopia: "Seven armed groups have formed a new alliance." Looks like every ethnic group has its own armed militia. A country like this is chronically going to be at war.
🇪🇹 Ethiopia is sliding toward another major war. Seven armed groups, including former enemies from the last civil war, have formed a new alliance aimed at removing PM Abiy Ahmed from power. The coalition includes the TPLF, Fano and the Oromo Liberation Army. And things escalated fast: Tigrayan forces seized the airports in Mekelle, Axum and Shire, forcing Ethiopian Airlines to suspend flights to the region. The wild part is that some of these groups were literally fighting each other just a few years ago. Now they’ve apparently decided Abiy is the bigger problem. Writer: Sol

As far as I know, they do not want to separate. They are fighting over what share of the spoils they get for controlling the state.

The most prestigious French literary prize, which had preselected Orélien's novel for the contest this year, announced that it was excluded from the list because he plagiarized works he's published in the past and his novel was "in all likelihood largely the product of an AI". It has now come to light that virtually everything Orélien has ever published was either plagiarized or written by AI, so this decision isn't surprising. This comes after the French literary world almost unanimously hailed the novel as a work of genius. In a show that was recorded before the story broke, Orélien was even compared to Victor Hugo, it was completely surreal. Most of the praise for the novel alludes to the fact that it casts immigration in a positive light, so I think it's clear that the desire to promote a pro-immigration narrative played a role, but it's also clear that it would never have happened if Orélien hadn't been black. Sometimes I think anti-racist liberals are racist toward black people in a way that is far more offensive than the way in which openly anti-black racists are. The latter are at least honest about what they believe, whereas the former clearly think that black people should be treated as permanent children whose every turd should be praised (kind of how parents clap and tell their 5-year-old they're proud of him whenever he produces a doodle), which is arguably more disrespectful.

The usual pattern: a older man who never stepped aside for any woman now wants younger men to be discriminated against in selection.

In 2023, @gclarkecon argued in PNAS the long-run persistence of social status fits an additive genetic model with assortative mating. The main critique was that pedigree data alone couldn't rule out a social transmission model. The last few years seem to vindicate him. 🧵(1/4)

Amazing WSJ piece on cocaine smuggling into Europe. There are ten (10) Spanish police boats that can intercept smuggling vessels that travel at up to 70mph, across maybe 1,000km of coast, landing on which gives the smugglers free access to the entire EU. wsj.com/world/americas/cocai…

UNBELIEVABLE: The Francophone literary establishment has been fooled by an AI-written novel. The X account @Pangramed analyzed (through @pangram) excerpts from "C’était ça ou mourir", the supposed breakout novel of this year’s French literary season, written by Haitian-Québécois author Thélyson Orélien. The result appears conclusive: the novel was written by AI. And yet, the book has just won the 2026 Prix du Roman Fnac. It is also in contention for the French-speaking world’s most prestigious literary awards, including the Prix Goncourt and Prix Renaudot, and is currently being translated into 20 languages. Naturally, the author is Black, the novel centers on a Haitian migrant, and its message is unmistakably left-wing and pro-immigration. Could literary prizes possibly be biased in favor of left-wing messaging and authors who check the right DEI boxes? Surely not!

No! It is only hybrid-warfare if it comes from the nasty region of Russia. Otherwise it is just sparkling diversity.

I know it’s pedantic to say this is a picture of a millipede rather than an insect but I think it deeply undercuts the premise that one is being more rational than everyone else to not even get the most basic facts of entomology right.
