The U.S. Justice Department has concluded that the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine intentionally discriminated against White applicants in admissions for its 2023–2025 incoming classes, in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.
When applicants had the same MCAT scores, undergraduate GPAs and socioeconomic characteristics, UCSF was 12.6 times more likely to admit a Black applicant and 4.6 times more likely to admit a Hispanic applicant than a White applicant.
In 2025, UCSF accepted 6.96% of Black applicants and 4.83% of Hispanic applicants, compared with 1.70% of White applicants and 1.98% of Asian applicants.
The DOJ reveals UCSF used application questions, interviews and other criteria to identify and favor racial groups it considered underrepresented, and also found preferential access to diversity pipeline programs.
