Nigeria's tertiary institutions left 706,418 approved admission spaces unfilled in 2025, about 41 per cent of the total quota, according to JAMB figures. As the @NGRSenate passes new bills to establish federal universities, our Executive Director @SuleJacobs argues that @jamb_hq should publish each institution's admission figures against its approved quota when the 2026/2027 exercise ends. A quarter of the 2025 admission quota for degree programmes went unused. In colleges of education, nearly nine in ten places were not filled. Nigeria may need more universities, but before we establish them, @jamb_hq should publish how each institution uses its quota. With less than two weeks to go before the congressional elections, Americans are nearly as gloomy about the economy as they were when the nation was emerging from the pandemic, and President Donald Trump’s economic approval rating is hitting an all-time low, according to the latest CNBC All-America Economic Survey. Eight out of 10 Americans rate the economy as fair or poor, the highest number since December 2023 and one of several ominous signs for Republicans in the new polling data released Thursday that show why their candidates are facing an uphill battle in the midterm. N70,000 WAGE AWARD: NIGERIAN UNION OF PENSIONERS DEMANDS INCULSION The Nigerian Union of Pensioners, NUP, has called for their inclusion in the recently approved N70,000 monthly transport allowance for Nigerian workers in the public service. The retirees who made the appeal at a press briefing in Abuja said pensioners too should be considered as vulnerable persons in the society as many with health challenges and with no other income apart from their pensions which they struggle to cope with current economic realities. While appreciating the Federal Government for recognizing the importance of improving the welfare of serving workers, the union decries why pensioners who also devoted their productive years to service before retirement were not considered during the negotiation. NUP also raised concern over non implementation of the N25,000 monthly palliative approved by the Federal Government in October 2023 to the 15 million households and vulnerable persons of which the pensioners where included.

Just last month, DoorDash couldn’t seem to find the money to pay their deliveristas — until our administration forced them to give back $131M+ in stolen wages and penalties. This week, they’ve managed to find $17 billion to acquire one of their main competitors. Corporate consolidation means higher prices, harsher exploitation, and greater economic inequality for New Yorkers. We’ve stood up to these giants before. That doesn’t stop now.

Recognising Excellence, Upholding Standards The Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, presented the two highest-scoring candidates in the 2026 UTME and six exceptional underage candidates to the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa @DrTunjiAlausa. Of approximately 39,000 underage candidates, 108 successfully met the requirements of JAMB’s screening process for consideration for possible admission. While celebrating exceptional performance, JAMB remains committed to upholding the established criteria governing admission consideration. Meeting the screening requirements does not guarantee automatic admission, as final admission remains subject to the applicable process. #JAMB #UTME2026 #UnderageAdmission #TheTrustWeHold #ThePeopleWeServe

An alarming map from the Climate Impact Lab shows where Super El Niño will cause the most additional heat deaths as the weather anomaly gains steam in the Pacific. Over 373,000 additional people will perish between October 2026-March 2027 with Nigeria, India and Brazil accounting for a third of the death toll. This is according to the apocalyptic cartography, dubbed the El Niño Heat Mortality Tracker. Nigeria is predicted to bear the brunt of the burn, with over 56,000 projected heat-related casualties during this timeframe. Following close behind, per the model, is India, where 55,200 are expected to be at risk. Rounding out the top five are Indonesia (29,300), Brazil (19,500) and Sudan (14,700). To determine just how devastating the effects will be, the team estimated the number of additional heat deaths caused by the current El Niño compared with average conditions from 1996 to 2005. The study spans roughly 3,700 regions worldwide and is updated monthly with forecasts for the next six months. Per the map, El Niño will contribute to 857,400 additional heat-related deaths from the phenomenon’s start in June 2026 to March 2027 — over 350,000 higher than the scientists’ projection just a month ago. Of the nine-month total, over half that many additional deaths are expected to occur over the next six months.

OVER 1 BILLION PAID, NO SUBSTANTIAL PROGRESS ON THE RECONSTRUCTION OF RANDLE GENERAL HOSPITAL Dear Hon. @femigbaja and @NBRRI_Official, the people of Randle, Lawanson, Marshal, Akerele, Bode Thomas, Adeniran Ogunsanya, and surrounding communities deserve answers. The reconstruction and equipping of Randle General Hospital, Surulere, Lagos, was captured in the 2024 Federal Government budget. The project was also highlighted in our 2025 annual report after N210m was disbursed to it in 2022, yet no implementation was observed at the time. Shortly after the report was published, contractors arrived on site. However, the latest developments raise fresh concerns about the pace of implementation and the use of public funds. On 20 December 2025, N406m was paid to Lagfield Construction Ltd for the reconstruction and remodelling of Randle General Hospital, Surulere, Lagos. On the same day, another N399.4m was paid to Candon Construction Ltd for the equipping, reconstruction and remodelling of the same project, bringing the total amount disbursed to N805.4m. Yet, nearly a year after these payments, our monitoring visit to the project site in October 2026 revealed little visible progress, with the foundation still not fully formed. Meanwhile, since January 2026, staff of the hospital have been evacuated and redistributed to other hospitals and PHCs around the axis, further underscoring the disruption caused by the prolonged reconstruction. How has over N1 billion been paid towards this project, yet construction remains at such an early stage? What accounts for the slow pace of work, and when will residents begin to see substantial progress? The implications of this delay extend beyond the construction site. Randle General Hospital serves residents across several surrounding communities, and prolonged disruption to its operations places additional pressure on other healthcare facilities receiving its displaced staff and patients. There is also a financial risk. With inflation continuing to drive up the cost of construction materials, labour and other inputs, delays could increase the overall cost of the project, place additional pressure on public resources and potentially jeopardise timely completion. We therefore call on @NBRRI_Official and the relevant authorities to explain the slow pace of construction despite the N805.4m disbursed to the two contractors. N805.4m has been disbursed. Where is the commensurate progress, and when will Randle General Hospital be ready to serve the people again? Public funds must translate into tangible results, and residents deserve clear answers.
