News of people impersonating lawyers often come with claims of winning 10, 20, or 30 cases. Every time that I picked an interest to dig deeper, I realised that those claims were untrue.
I am certain that this man either did not win any case or the said wins had heavy and substantial let-in of a lawyer. I am sure that he did not win 11 cases.
What matters? Before which court? Most likely not from the High Court up. Can we get a CTC of the judgments?
It will be hard for someone to conduct matters as a lawyer and not arouse the suspicion of the opposing lawyer, the court, or even other colleagues in court. The signs will be there. I have even seen judges questioning some actual lawyers.
This is not to say that a lawyer cannot win a case. The Constitution allows for self-representation and some have done it. Many succeeded. Many failed. Many failed regretfully. However, I noticed that a good percentage of those who did self-representation are lawyers, or have the support of a lawyer.
In addition, most of these news reports are false. For instance, the first time I heard of the case of Ukeje v Ukeje, the article claimed that the first Appellant, Mrs Lois Chuturu Ukeje handled the matter by herself. I was so impressed and would have admitted myself to the error of rumour peddling if I did not grab part 1418, which showed that from the trial court to the Supreme Court, parties were represented by lawyers, including Chief G.O.K Ajayi, SAN and Chief Anthony Idigbe, SAN at a point.
I also noticed that courts sometimes overlook the expectations as per procedure and certain things when non-lawyers choose to self-represent.
So, can we get the CTC of the 11 judgments? And let us see the names of the lawyers on the other side? And before which court?
