Meet Hakyung Jun, 2026 @BarrowNeuro Summer Intern from Kona, Hawaii. The ALS Network’s support of young researchers emphasizes hands-on engagement in students like Hakyung. Working with the Institute’s Ping Wang, PhD, Hakyung centered her research around two MRI imaging techniques to calculate the error between the scans of the diffusion and fat phantoms, which was used to verify the reliability of MRI measurements. Exciting news from the ALS research community: @ionispharma and @OtsukaUS announced that ulefnersen, an investigational antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) for FUS-ALS, met its primary endpoint in the Phase 3 FUSION trial, demonstrating a statistically significant benefit on a combined measure of function and survival. Important secondary measures were also positive. The news is especially meaningful for the FUS-ALS community and builds on more than two decades of pioneering ALS research. Early leaders in this field included Dr. Richard Smith and Dr. Don Cleveland, whose work with UC San Diego and Ionis helped demonstrate the potential of antisense approaches in ALS at a time when the technology was still considered highly experimental. Our Care Manager will serve ALS patients and families in a variety of ways including psychosocial support, information and referral, and advocacy surrounding health issues and insurance questions. This individual will guide and monitor patients and families through the progression of the illness, refer patients and families to community services, facilitate monthly support groups, serve as liaisons to ALS clinics, and assist with the implementation of treatment recommendations made by clinic staff.
