If growth is irrelevant why is your leader claiming that he’d pay for all his pie in the sky tax cuts from the much higher growth he thinks would come from rejoining the single market?
This by @afneil is what's wrong with the European debate. Growth rates of countries are irrelevant. If you've run a business then you know that the size of the market available to sell into is what matters. That's why joining the single market is backed by British business.

That’s the best you can do? You really are devoid of substance when it comes to argument. You’ve lived in your own little echo chamber for so long you’ve stopped doing your homework to keep abreast of what’s actually happening.
UK businesses want frictionless trade with Europe to generate growth, jobs and prosperity. But pro-Brexit commentators like @afneil apparently know so much better than everyone else. “Shut up and enjoy your gruel,” they shout. Meanwhile, we all get poorer.

Not at all. It’s thanks to net zero we’ve lost most of our diesel refineries and have now to rely on imports.
Is there something wrong with your order, sir?

I look forward to you spearheading the campaign to rejoin the EU and join the euro. I’m sure the British people will embrace both very warmly.
Replying to @afneil
What’s wrong with joining the Euro? It’s good enough for you to use living in France

So making up quotes and attributing them to me. Didn’t say we’d have to join the euro. Said we’d have to if we wanted the lower borrowing rates. Non-euro Poland pays even more than non-euro UK to borrow over 10 years. A lot more.
Replying to @afneil
"You have to join the Euro" is the dishonest let's-stay-out straw man. I live in Poland (złoty) on the Czech border (koruna). We all shop each side. (I prefer Czech beer. My children do Czech piano lessons). In PL and CZ there is zero, I mean ZERO pressure to join the Euro.

Your chart stops 2022. Between 2017-2025 UK real GDP growth was 9%, EU-27 11%. So only 2 points in it — and EU boosted by rebound of Club Med countries after Eurozone crisis.

Every single assertion you make is factually incorrect. You really need to do better.
No one, not even supporters of Brexit like @afneil, can call it an economic success. We’ve put barriers to trade with our biggest market, and now the Treasury is losing tens of billions in revenue each year. Unless we bring those barriers down, Britain will remain poorer.

Heathrow is one of Britain’s most important strategic assets. To expand it, in the final resort, is not a decision for London. It is a decision for the national government.
You can tell he's still in his mayoral mindset from answers like this. Andy, believe it or not, London is the capital city of the country you are currently in charge of. You are responsible for this as well. You're not in Manchester anymore.

No. Release it on to the domestic market to bring down prices before November’s mid-term elections.

Trump is not going to impose a diesel ban. He’s playing with the market. The US produce far more diesel than they require! What they gonna do, pump it into the sea?

At no stage have I ever said the EU would collapse — because I’ve never thought it would. My point was that the EU we left in 2016 is morphing/will morph into something very different. Difficult to see how anybody could gainsay that. But no doubt X’s legion of know-nothing nutters will try.
Replying to @afneil
It's very relevant. Leavers everywhere have been quoting your question time video saying the EU is about to collapse. It won't. Just as it didn't when Leavers warned it would after Britain left. Not even Leavers say Brexit has gone well, but as usual we prefer stupidity.

This is a shockingly popular tweet. Must be nice about competent people more often.
What makes Andrew Neil so much better than other political journalists and interviewers? He's more interested in the facts than the politicians, and bothers to know them.

Give me a single important example in which the EFTA court has not complied with an ECJ ruling.
Not if you join the EEA. Then it’s EFTA Court, which we would have 1/4 of. Plus you have the Joint Committee

In practice, untrue. Membership of EFTA does not put you into single market. That has to be EFTA + EEA. There is an EFTA court for that but in all important rulings it follows the ECJ. Give me examples when it hasn’t.
Replying to @afneil
That's not actually correct. The Single Market countries that aren't in the EU do have a say, and are overseen by the EFTA Court not the ECJ. Thread:

You can see the exact moment when the Lib Dem realises his case for rejoining the EU customs union has been comprehensively demolished by @afneil #bbcqt

And you are arguing in ignorance. Look at the composition of the Boris Wave. It was skewed hugely towards students, dependants and those in lower-paid care/work. So the average productivity of the incremental population was not the same as the incumbent average. In other words the new arrivals didn’t do much for GDP (at least in the short term). But the scale of the numbers reduced GDP/capita.
Replying to @afneil
lol - and GDP wouldn't be skewed by that either? Immigration has been the biggest driver of GDP growth, simply because there are more bodies. You are arguing against your own point.
