On this day in 1948, Satchel Paige made his first MLB start with the Cleveland Indians. He became the first Black pitcher in the American League. At 42 years old, Paige is the oldest rookie in MLB history.

The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame mourns the passing of 2015 Inductee Bobby Hunt. Hunt played quarterback and defensive back at Auburn University. He was drafted by the Dallas Texans in the 11th round of the 1962 AFL Draft.

Hunt was named First-Team All-Pro in 1962 and helped lead the Texans to the AFL Championship. Four years after the Texans moved to Kansas City and were renamed the Chiefs, Hunt led the team to another AFL title.

The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame mourns the passing of 2011 Inductee Al Worthington. Worthington played baseball at the University of Alabama where he finished his pitching career with a 14-3 record.

In 1964, he led all relief pitchers with an ERA of 1.38. Worthington helped lead the Twins to the American League pennant in 1965. He led the American League in saves in 1968 with 18 saves. In 1986, Worthington was selected to the Twins All-Time Team.

The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame mourns the passing of 2025 Inductee Charlie "Butch" Moore. Moore was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers out of Minor High School in the fifth round of the 1971 MLB Draft. He made his debut with the Brewers on September 8, 1973.

I started my collegiate coaching career over 40 years ago. This isn’t just my award, but it’s a tribute to the hardworking players, coaches, and staff I was fortunate to work alongside.
There’s no other country on Earth that gives you the opportunity to find this kind of success in doing what you love. It’s one of the reasons America is the greatest country in history.
