⭕️ A second Saturday of nationwide protests in France passed far more calmly than last week's rioting, with marches largely peaceful under a massive security deployment.
About 410,000 people marched across France, according to the Interior Ministry, while the CGT labor union put the figure at 800,000. Police in Paris counted 110,000 and described the mood as "calm."
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported 135 arrests nationwide, 65 of them in Paris, and "no major incident" as of Saturday afternoon. Up to 70,000 police were deployed after about 3,000 shops were damaged or looted across France last Saturday.
There were still scattered clashes today. Police fired tear gas in Lyon, where protests had been banned, and in Lille and Toulouse. In Nantes, they used tear gas and a water cannon after thousands broke through police lines, and clashes were reported in Montpellier.
