This might be a silly question but why don’t we have LED lights that have the orange/yellow hue to them? The blue is awful.
these sodium street lights giving me pure nostalgia

Blue lighting keeps you awake which is what you want when driving.

🙋‍♀️optical engineer of illumination here -- the big draw to white LEDs is that they're super efficient at converting electric power to light. But the more you drop it down to orangey-er color temperatures, the more you kick your efficiency in the nuts, so it defeats the purpose.

We use white light because it provides better visibility. It's not for vibes, it's to make everyone safer.

cool/blue lights keep you awake and alert while orange ones are relaxing to the eyes and help you sleep i personally think they should be warm/orange in neighborhoods and apartment complexes and cool/bright on highways and major roads

The point of street lights are to help you see. The orange lights are garbage and as someone with astigmatism im fucking glad they are gone.

blue light keeps you awake and alert. lights that warm of an orange, like a sunset, are calming. sedative. lull you to sleep. you want drivers awake and alert more than you want them half-asleep thinking the lighting is pretty.

Sodium lights are vibey but aren’t bright enough to deter crime and make people look jaundiced and sickly, which combine to hurt foot traffic and local biz. Feels solvable with LEDs

one of the major efficiency advantages of LED lights is that it doesn’t have to emit light over a large portion of the spectrum like incandescent there are bulbs with different phosphors or multi channel LEDs, but they cost more negating the main advantage over incandescent

It's the flickering rate. It's not the color. The heated element doesn't flicker. LED does. You can't see it with your eyes but your brain registers it and blue light messes with your circadian rhythm

The glare of bright white LED's can actually be worse for visual acuity.
Debilitating glare from too bright of lights is an actual thing, not just modern woosy-ness. The LED headlights are terrible. Grok:"disability glare (or sometimes just glare in contexts like vision impairment). This happens because the intense light scatters within the eye (creating veiling luminance or a "veil" of light across the retina), which reduces contrast and washes out the visibility of darker or less intense objects in the visual field. It's not just discomfort; it actually impairs or "disables" normal vision temporarily."

Becase led's produce light through a drop in charge carriers across a bandgap, and not through black body radiation. You can kind of make something approximating white light via an LED + phosphor coating, but it is not the same. You asked.

Using whiter LEDs also has a greater negative effect on nocturnal ecosystems. Even in diurnal species, blue light at night negatively affects melatonin production. Biologically, humans have evolved to function with warmer hues at night (like from a fire). White is unnatural.

What sucks about these LEDs is that they fail in bad ways, so delamination causing the lights to be purplish. Totally rubbish. Bring back the sodium lamps.

IMO It's a lack of foresight. Warmer color temperatures are actually better for the eyes at night. I'd love to go back to that. The bottom picture isn't white balanced either. The sky and everything else in the photo wouldn't look orange just because the lights are.
