while the biggest use case qcomm has solved for me is gifting, it’s v hard to shake off the guilt of sending someone a gift from blinkit it’ll always seem a less thoughtful - despite the end product being the same as what you'd have picked up from a store / bought on ecomm

perks of having super smart friends: you’re never out of substacks and essays to read. if you don’t follow her on substack, you should. and read it, of course. really good stuff.

Absolutely very well articulated reason as to why we hate AI slop.
I feel this is the strongest reason why visibly AI generated content irks us as consumers: AI has broken the relationship between the effort it takes to make something & the effort it takes to consume it. You can produce 2000 words article instantly, but I still read at human speed. You can generate 50 ad concepts prompting an LLM of your choice over lunch, while the users you put them in front of still have the same finite number of hours, eyes & brain cells they had before gen AI existed. Production has become abundant with this automation, but attention remains scarce.

The most refreshing thing about Indian brands today is how unapologetically Indian they are - good examples are: gully labs hosting "baithaks", cherrapunji explaining the north eastern geography that makes their gin special, or subko talking about the craftery behind their cocoa sourced from across the subcontinent. It feels oddly new + full of pride, because it wasn’t that long ago that being visibly “Indian” wasn’t necessarily something brands wanted to advertise. Louis Philippe, Allen Solly, Van Heusen - were all made to sound like they were stitched somewhere off Savile Row. Every one of them is actually owned by the Aditya Birla group. This may be common knowledge now, but there was a time when learning Louis Philippe was an Indian brand was as jarring as learning that Bata is not. Both facts felt like betrayals of something you had assumed your whole life.

reminds me of my fav quote “working out will make you feel weak, when it's actually making you stronger. learning new things will make you feel dumb, when it's actually making you smarter. investing in yourself will make you feel broke, when it's actually making you rich.”
I regret to inform you that if you don't have enough energy to exercise, it means you're not exercising enough.

we shall see what kills us first: the AI or the AQI.
I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

part of the answer is to travel solo often & esp to places that are unfamiliar. repetition takes away some of the novelty + travelling with someone can make it easier to stay in your shared comfort zone. travel is about having to find your way through that discomfort.
modern travel is increasingly flying 10 hours to experience a slightly different version of the same globally optimized lifestyle. same third wave coffee. same natural wine bar. same brutalist menu. same sourdough. same beige hotel. same tasteful ceramics. same instagram lighting. what a ridiculous convergence.

our consumption of everything we recognise as "AI slop" goes through this lifecyle: holy shit, AI can do this becoming holy shit, you know how to make AI do this which becomes yes, obviously AI can do this and eventually, if the aesthetic becomes recognisable enough, you couldn’t even be bothered to make this look less AI-generated?
