'Future Reliks' by @_KamauKamau A contemporary African art project exploring identity, culture, tradition and spirituality through reimagined masks. The project draws inspiration from a large database of documented African masks spanning over thousands of years, particularly ones associated with West and Central African cultures and transforming them through modern technology. Long before Miyazaki added them to his film 'Princess Mononoke', the Kodama are tree spirits in Japanese folklore. They date back over a thousand years, to stories that counted them among mountain gods. Neither fully good nor evil, they exist within nature. In 'Princess Mononoke', they take the form of small, pale, bobble-headed spirits that turn to watch you pass, then disappear back into the trees. I remember standing in the Chihuahuan Desert during my residency and seeing a cluster of cacti at dawn. Their figures had symbols of a face that felt familiar. Still, upright, watching without watching. I realized they felt connected. That image became a thread in 'Starlight'. The way Kodama fill a forest, the way cacti fill Mitchell Flat, the way the Marfa Lights are simply there, asking nothing, and proving nothing. They are just existing like us.
