Attackers have drained over 1000 Bitcoin from Coldcard users via a 5-year-old bug in open-source code that nobody caught. My proposal: an industry standard to make seed generation verifiable.

Shout out to @BTCSoCo for taking three hours today to virtually host an honest discussion on self-custody, what actually went wrong, and the options Bitcoiners should consider going forward. This is what strong local Bitcoin communities are for: separating facts from panic and engagement farming, and instead helping people leave better prepared than they arrived. Thanks to @HarryGBeckwith, @tiffany_varty, @NatalieVarty, @iceusurp, for organizing it, and everyone who contributed and showed up. This is the way.

As a non-technical person in this space, the last 72 hours have brought me to learn many new words & acronyms (I didn’t know 60% on this list): Entropy = randomness. How unpredictable something is. High entropy → impossible to guess. Your seed words are only safe if they were born from high entropy. RNG = Random Number Generator. The thing that creates that randomness. TRNG = True Random Number Generator. A chip that pulls randomness from physics. Truly unguessable. CRNG/CSPRNG = Cryptographically Secure Random Number Generator. Randomness strong enough to keep secrets. Even watching its output, you can't predict the next number. Only as good as the true entropy fed into it. HWW = Hardware wallet. The little device that keeps your keys offline. FOSS = Free and Open Source Software. Code anyone can read and check. Open source means it can be checked. Don’t trust. Verify. Libngu = Library Number Go Up. Pre-built code developers reuse instead of rebuilding from scratch. (libngu is the library where this bug lived.) Commit = a saved code change with a note explaining what changed and why. It's how researchers traced the ColdCard flaw back to March 2021. UTXO = Unspent Transaction Output. Faraday cage = electromagnetic shielding. Hww will have zero wireless communication while stored. Seed = your 12/24 words. The master key. Ephemeral seed = temporary; a seed that lives only in a device’s memory while you’re using it, and vanishes completely when the device powers off. Passphrase = an extra word only you know, on top of your seed. Single sig = Single signature. Multisig = Multi signature. Your Bitcoin needs 2-of-3 keys to move. SHA 256 = Secure Hash Algorithm, 256-bit. The math that secures Bitcoin. Xpub = extended public key. Entire wallet history. BIP = Bitcoin Improvement Proposal. Derivation path = the address’ coordinates in your wallet’s family tree. Restore your seed & see zero? Almost always the wrong path, not lost coins. Don’t panic, don’t re-type your seed anywhere, check the path. Bricking = when a device becomes permanently non-functional. “As useful as a brick.” It’s the hardware version of death. Dusting = an attacker sends tiny, nearly worthless amounts of bitcoin to thousands of addresses. It’s a tracking device. 👇🏽Feel free to scrutinize, update, add, and make better. 1/ During our investigation of the Coldcard drain yesterday, we identified an unusual pattern in the sweeps. That pattern led us to a hypothesis that has since been confirmed: the operator used a paid account at a well-known blockchain-services provider to query the source addresses and perform other related activity during the sweeps.

Out of an abundance of caution (and clarity if my fast post was murky) Regardless of your set-up... if you generated your seed phrase(s) from ColdCard's automatic generator on an Mk2, Mk3, Mk4, you are at risk. Locked UTXOs that can only be spent in the future are not at risk NOW from this current bug, but certainly would be when the block height arrives if it was generated with the ColdCard and without a passphrase and/or dice rolling. Ditto for Locked KEYS (relative time-locking vs absolute time-locking). If that key that doesn't become valid until a certain point in time was made with this bug, consider it at risk. And per my other posts (see my time-line), if you are safe now, but want to harden your setup, please consider a multisig set-up with various manufacturers and potentially a collaborative agent for one of those keys.
