Better Blocks advocates for better urban land use so JC and NJ can build more housing, businesses, parks, & transit to sustain our vibrant communities.
Jersey City is in a fiscal crisis.
Instead of fixing roads or improving public parks, Mayor @SolomonforJC is spending $1 million in CDBG funds to block housing on a tiny lot and lease it for $1 to MSCB, which is run by the homeowners next door so they can use it as a garden.
For the first time in years, District 4 has a contested race for Hudson County Commissioner.
We sent incumbent Yraida Aponte-Lipski and challenger Aaron Weiner our 17-question pledge on housing, BRT, Vision Zero, and parks.

Planning board: Weiner backs clear, predictable timelines and calls delays a cost driver that holds back housing. Aponte-Lipski, who sits on the planning board, says she'd need to know what specifically feels obstructive before committing to changes.
Both candidates signed on to every commitment in the pledge. Where they differ is specificity and urgency. Read their full, unedited answers by topic before you vote on Nov. 3.

We heard you want your buses fast, free from traffic, and on-time.
Attend the Hudson County Bus Rapid Transit meeting this Wednesday to help make that a reality.
This is great news! This was always arbitrary and heavy handed, not to mention a loss of important property rights, with no compensation. If you believe it’s historic , designate it! It’s that simple.

There is a community meeting tomorrow evening at 7:00 p.m. to be held in St. Joseph's Church to discuss whether Baldwin Avenue should remain a one-way road.
Please attend to join the discussion and to advocate for safe streets.
This was the McGinley Square Community Board in 2023 on 128 Glenwood. It's pretty clear what their motivation is for the city buying the lot, and any other justification is besides the point.
Strange goings on with JC OPRA compliance, which didn't start with Solomon, but continue under him. Falsely claimed to have no records for Banker Group presentation on Canal Crossing. Falsely claimed to have no records on 128 Glenwood. Both literally discussed at council meetings
Might be worth mentioning that the MacCormacks (and their McGinley Square Community Board) are conveniently located right next door to the lot at 128 Glenwood that the city is generously purchasing for $1.2 million so they won’t be benighted with a small multifamily apartment.
A beloved mid-century library branch with failing HVAC after decades of deferred maintenance. Asbestos making a routine replacement into a multi-year capital project. Summer closures, then permanent closure.
Sound familiar? It's not Five Corners. It's Brooklyn Heights, 2015.

Redeveloping the current library site is the most straight-forward way to get a new state-of-the-art public library building when the city has budget constraints.
Even NYC is moving to make surplus land and air-rights sales faster — generating a projected $200M.

Journal Square is the fastest-growing neighborhood in the city, but, right now, its public library is a book drop in a parking lot. That's unacceptable.
The city can fix its budget and build better public amenities at the same time.
