BLOCK JOINS x402 FOUNDATION, BRINGS BITCOIN LIGHTNING TO AI AGENT PAYMENTS Block has joined the x402 Foundation and contributed Bitcoin Lightning support to the open payment standard for AI agents. x402 embeds payments directly into HTTP, allowing AI agents to autonomously pay for goods, services and other agentic tools. Block says Lightning is suited for the billions of instant, low-cost, small payments expected to emerge from the agentic economy.

Making agent payments easier solves the execution layer. The next question is the mandate behind the payment. If an agent can spend autonomously, counterparties may also need to know which person or entity granted that authority, what limits apply, and whether the transaction falls within them.

Block joining x402 and bringing Bitcoin Lightning to AI agent payments is the kind of infrastructure that makes machine-to-machine commerce actually possible, embedding payments into HTTP means agents can autonomously transact. This is the future being built now. @RitadeCSB is the one I trust to read how big this gets.
