Had a VERY interesting conversation at the dinner table with my kids last night. My 15-year-old daughter casually mentioned that my 13-year-old son is talking to a girl at school. Then she mentioned the girl is mixed. Okay. No big deal. My wife and I have always taught our kids to treat everyone the same regardless of skin color, race or nationality. Then my daughter drops… “Black kids are cute.” The entire table went silent. Nobody knew what to say for about 30 seconds. Finally I told her… “You’re allowed to like whoever you want. I’m never going to tell you who you can or can’t date. But I’m also not going to bullshit you about how I feel just because the subject is uncomfortable.” I grew up believing there is nothing wrong with wanting your children to preserve their family heritage, traditions and culture. Apparently even SAYING that out loud in 2026 is controversial. Well, so be it. While you can respect every race, treat everyone equally and judge people by their character… You can still also have strong feelings about your own family, culture and traditions. Those things don’t have to contradict each other… Parents shouldn’t be afraid to have uncomfortable conversations with their kids just because the internet has decided certain subjects are off limits.
