This argument doesn’t make any sense because Trump wouldn’t have won the nomination in 2016 if Romney had won the presidential election in 2012.
Rewarding the GOP with the presidency in 2012 would have prevented MAGA from ever existing.
The GOP is not going to learn the lesson you are trying to teach them. They’re not going to take you seriously. They’re going to interpret a big midterm loss as an indication that Trump-style populism failed, and that they now have permission to return to the old guard. The objective should be to let the GOP do what the GOP is going to do, because they’re going to do it regardless, and to still vote for them, while getting involved locally. Political change and sentiment change is gradual, something that is done over the course of generations. You’re not going to get an American politician within the American political system who will unilaterally press the “fix everything button.” You just won’t.
And yet, there still is nothing good that will come from ceding ground to the Democrats. Nothing.
