There are screw-ups. There are scandals. And then there is Britain’s immigration and asylum system. The latest instalment comes courtesy of an extraordinary Sunday Times investigation into a man who came to Britain from Gaza more than a decade ago. We can’t name him (naturally). But we do know a few things about him. Incredibly, he had been a bodyguard to Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas leader later assassinated by Israel in Tehran. His father was another senior Hamas figure. He had been arrested in Egypt for operating a tunnel used to smuggle guns and gold into Gaza. This was not secret intelligence buried in a Mossad filing cabinet. His relationship with Haniyeh was publicly known. There were photographs of the pair together. So what did Britain do? In 2015, we gave him asylum. Then indefinite leave to remain. Then British citizenship. He settled down in an English city with his wife and children, changed his name more than once and reinvented himself as an IT consultant. And now? He is in custody awaiting possible extradition to Germany, accused of playing an “essential” role in a Hamas plot to attack Jewish community centres, Israeli diplomats and pro-Israel demonstrations in Germany or Austria. You couldn’t make it up. Except, in Britain, we keep making it up. Because this is hardly the first time we have welcomed people with extraordinary Islamist backgrounds into the country, allowed them to put down roots and, sometimes, solemnly presented them with the priceless gift of British citizenship. Once might be a mistake. Twice might be incompetence. After a while, you wonder whether it is an addiction to self-harm. Everything about this story shows how screwed up state decision-making seems to be: "At the time he was awarded refugee status, it was public knowledge that:" he'd worked for the son of a senior Hamas official & had been arrested in Egypt for operating a tunnel allegedly used to smuggle firearms and gold into Gaza...Yet he was granted sanctuary & operated under deep cover as an IT consultant living in the suburbs. He changed his legal name more than once but was "not thought to have been a priority for the British security services as he began co-ordinating with Hamas terrorists on the Continent" .Oh, and a judge granted him anonymity for 100 years, only amended after it was queried by The Sunday Times.

He used his British passport to travel to Hamas allies Turkey and Qatar. He delivered guns from Berlin to Vienna and did a pre-recorded video where claimed responsibility for the planned Islamist attacks on the continent. HOW MANY MORE PEOPLE LIKE THIS ARE IN BRITAIN?!

Absolutely insane exposé by The Times: Britain granted asylum to a Hamas terrorist who had served as Ismail Haniyeh’s bodyguard. He later received indefinite leave to remain and eventually became a British citizen. The Times cannot name him because a UK court has restricted his identification while he faces separate criminal proceedings in Britain. But foreign reporting identifies him as Mohammed Naim, the son of senior Hamas official Bassem Naim. His background was hardly obscure. Egyptian authorities had reportedly detained him years earlier in connection with smuggling through a tunnel into Gaza. Yet he settled in Britain, worked in IT, changed his name more than once and apparently attracted little attention from the security services. Now German prosecutors accuse him of helping prepare Hamas attacks against Jews and Israelis in Europe before the second anniversary of the October 7 massacre. He allegedly moved weapons to Vienna and recorded a video while masked and armed in front of a Hamas flag. Just weeks before his arrest, Israeli intelligence says he met his father in Qatar (of course). How on earth did this man get asylum and citizenship in Britain?

At what point does a series of unfortunate events become something more serious? That is the question the BBC must answer after the latest extraordinary revelations about its reporting of the Gaza war (though most of us suspect that the broadcaster passed that point a long time ago). According to an investigation by the Telegraph, the corporation has described 53 dead terrorists as “journalists”. Some were photographed in military fatigues. Others posed with weapons. Some were eulogised as “martyrs” by jihadi groups. At least one is reported to have taken part in the October 7 massacre. Yet to the BBC, they were “journalists”. Given the ideology of its own hacks, perhaps that is an understandable mistake to make. But even to cynics like you or I, the details are astonishing. Let’s take a look... New post. I expect senior Conservatives to call out this apparent and obvious two tier criminal justice.

What Del Somerville did was wrong. But a 2 year prison sentence is obviously two-tier. Why is the British state punishing protestors harder than illegal migrants who break into our county and commit appalling crimes? Why do judges apply the principle of deterrence to sentencing protestors, and not to the illegal migrants who are terrorising women and girls across our country? Somerville got 2 years for swearing aggressively at the police and throwing a plastic bottle towards them. But for context: Maqbil Dhaheri arrived on a small boat and was sentenced in April 2026 for sexually assaulting a nurse. He escaped prison with a 12 month community order. Hussein Almiyyahi arrived in a small boat in April 2024 and was sentenced in May 2026 for four counts of sexual assaulting three women. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison. Tadi Alemeyeha arrived in July 2025 and was sentenced in February 2026 for sexually assaulting a woman and then threatening to keep her silent. He was sentenced for 18 months. This is why the British state has a legitimacy crisis. It exerts far more effort suppressing people’s concerns about immigration than actually fixing it. Reform will ensure the British government actually serves the British people again.

Today's gaslighting from our @uklabour Prime Minister is that Brexit made it more difficult to deport illegal immigrants. He is talking about the Dublin III agreement, which we left when we exited the EU. Fact is, more than 90% of the deportations we asked for under this agreement were refused and in practice its operation meant we took more than twice as many in as we were allowed to deport:
