I’ve seen a lot said about Ed Miliband meeting the Islamic regime foreign minister. But this concise article by @JakeWSimons says it best:
“When jihadists are your underdogs and democracies are your oppressors, you’ve lost the moral argument.”
Our Foreign Secretary should take the time to consider how his handshake looks to the many thousands of Iranian parents “whose children were slaughtered like animals on the streets, or blinded and castrated with shotguns, or hanged for the crime of wanting freedom, or executed by armed men as they lay in hospital.”

September 24, 2026: Noam Dworman sits down with "the world's leading famine expert" and reads him his old predictions and declarations about famine in Gaza.
Alex de Waal wrote the standard textbook on famine, runs the World Peace Foundation, and helped write starvation crimes into international law. When the media says "famine experts warn," this is who they mean.
In January 2024, he told Owen Jones famine would probably arrive by early February. February came and went. In March 2024, he told CBS it was expected between then and May. Days later, he told Democracy Now that children were dying "likely in thousands already." In April 2024, at Harvard, he called it the most intense famine since records began. In October 2025, Democracy Now brought him back.
Nobody ever asked him about any of prior predictions and declarations. On September 24, 2026, Noam Dworman did.

Alex de Waal once wrote that you need to overstate catastrophes in order to get attention. He was not joking.
October 6, 2025: Alex de Waal tells Democracy Now that famine is "one of the simplest problems in the world to resolve," and that Israel "can solve the starvation crisis...in a matter of days, should it want to do so."
In January 2024, he told Owen Jones the opposite. Even if the fighting stopped that day and Gaza were flooded with aid, the people "mainly children of course" dying of hunger would "continue to rise, will peak, and will decline over a much longer period of time." Unstoppable then. A matter of days now.

Gaza's recorded malnutrition death rate in 2025 (74 deaths through late July, per the WHO) works out to roughly the same per-capita rate as the United States, where the CDC counted over 20,000 malnutrition deaths in 2022.

At what point does a series of unfortunate events become something more serious? That is the question the BBC must answer after the latest extraordinary revelations about its reporting of the Gaza war (though most of us suspect that the broadcaster passed that point a long time ago).
According to an investigation by the Telegraph, the corporation has described 53 dead terrorists as “journalists”. Some were photographed in military fatigues. Others posed with weapons. Some were eulogised as “martyrs” by jihadi groups. At least one is reported to have taken part in the October 7 massacre.
Yet to the BBC, they were “journalists”. Given the ideology of its own hacks, perhaps that is an understandable mistake to make. But even to cynics like you or I, the details are astonishing. Let’s take a look...

Let’s start with one typical example. The writer Musa Okwonga and I have rather lost touch over the years, but I remember him as a man of great intelligence, sensitivity and good humour. We met at university and, some years after graduating, travelled to Israel together to play in a good-natured writers’ football tournament. We had a good time and as I recall, he loved the country.
Which is why I found his latest Substack essay so disturbing. “Genocide,” it begins. “We should probably start there.” Israel, he writes, is committing that worst of all crimes. Its troops are “using children for target practice”, its politicians engaged in a “process of revenge against the Palestinian population”.
He compares its conduct to the Ugandan atrocities against the Acholi, his own people. “Genocide infects and corrupts everything it touches,” he writes. True enough. Only in the case of Gaza, Musa, it’s quite obviously not a genocide...
