It’s time to stop making excuses for President Trump, claiming that everything is a joke. “Joking” about choosing to launch nuclear war is evidence of dangerous detachment from any basic level of understanding his job: he’s supposed to keep us safe *from* nuclear war; not spawn one. And obviously, it’s not just this problematic one post. He has been obsessed with posting AI images of himself in all sorts of fantasy environment, for months (and dozens today) which is something a commander-in-chief in his right mind would never do. It is time to acknowledge President Trump is suffering serious cognitive decline. We allow this to go on unchecked to our collective peril. If we don’t take constitutional measures to correct this deficiency while there is still time, we may invite destruction on ourselves.

My heart breaks for Lindsay Clancy. I hate that it took a tragedy like this to talk about women's mental health and postpartum depression. Too often, it is swept under the rug.  Our healthcare system has failed women. Many women are given the baby, told good luck, and thrown out on the street. These are real issues that impact tons of new moms. And it can lead to psychosis that gets worse with each child. The only way it changes is by addressing a healthcare system that is overwhelmed and unaccessible.

Part 3. In 2002 a pregnant mother in Washington applied for child support. The state ran a routine DNA test. It confirmed the father and ruled out the mother, and prosecutors moved to take her two children away. She had given birth to both of them. Lydia Fairchild had photographs, hospital records and the father's testimony that he watched both deliveries. Courts at the time treated DNA as close to infallible, so none of it counted. The judge ordered a witness into the delivery room for her third child, with blood drawn on the spot. That baby did not match her either. Her lawyer went looking for anything similar and found a paper in the New England Journal of Medicine about a 52 year old woman in Boston. Karen Keegan needed a kidney, so her family had been tested to find a donor. The results said two of her three sons could not be hers. The doctors who wrote her case up knew of only two other possible cases like it. Both women were chimeras. Two fertilized eggs had fused in the first days of development instead of growing into fraternal twins, leaving one person carrying two complete genomes. The scale is what separates this from the cell trading of ordinary pregnancy. Fairchild's hair, cheek, skin and blood all carried one genome, and a swab of her cervix found the other, which matched her children. Charges were dropped after roughly sixteen months. Keegan's ending is the strange one. She had gone looking for a kidney donor and been told her sons were not her sons. Chimeras tolerate both of their cell lines, so her doctors concluded that a wider range of relatives could safely donate to her than for an ordinary patient, her three sons included. The same quirk that made a laboratory say she was not their mother is what made every one of them eligible to save her life.
