The left just lost Okinawa. For 12 years the prefecture was run by All-Okinawa, the local left coalition backed by the Communists and other anti-base parties. Denny Tamaki was their governor for eight of those years. Yesterday voters replaced him with Genta Koja, a conservative backed by Japan’s right-of-center camp. Koja: 423,124. Tamaki: 276,060. A 147,000-vote beating. The room went quiet at 8 p.m. Tamaki’s pitch was peace. No Henoko. Friendlier talk with Beijing. In 2019 he asked China to use Okinawa for the Belt and Road. The record was uglier. In June 2024 a 47-year-old security guard died at Henoko trying to stop a protester from walking in front of a dump truck. Tamaki’s allies later refused to watch the camera tape. In March 2026 a “peace study” boat capsized off Henoko. A 17-year-old girl and the captain died.
