Ayodhya has banned the delivery of non-vegetarian food within a 15 km radius of the Ram Mandir. Similarly, the Kerala Government should impose a "vegetarian food only" rule around the Guruvayur Kshetram. In fact, all temples across India should implement this.
This is not a campaign against meat. Meat is celebrated in Hinduism - buffalo, goats and chickens are sacrificed to the Gods. The National Family Health Survey-5 suggests more than 75% of Hindus consume some form of meat and fish. So do Sikhs and forest tribes.
But most temples are meat free zones and so the object of the ban is to establish a sacred space around temples and prevent people from desecrating the area.
There are numerous cases of tourists and lumpen elements brazenly consuming biryani in temple premises and leaving the rubbish in the temple courtyards. The picture below is from the beautiful 860 year old Airawateswara Temple in Darasuram, Tamil Nadu. A group of well dressed local college students had a picnic and did not pick up their rubbish when they left.
Temple parikrama should be meat free. You are free to do whatever you want in Pakistan and Rome. We have to do whatever it takes to protect temples in India.
