Texas should not routinely collect billions more than it needs. Instead of using excess revenue to grow spending, we should focus on collecting less from taxpayers in the first place. My Texas Working Families Tax Relief Act is one piece of that strategy. It would eliminate sales taxes on everyday necessities families actually need, including car seats, school supplies, children’s clothing, safety equipment, and other essentials. Property tax relief remains critically important, but not every Texan owns a home. Texans who rent pay taxes too, and they should also benefit when the state has the ability to reduce the tax burden. This bill is not intended to compete with property tax relief. It is about reducing the amount of money flowing into the Texas state budget by letting working families keep more of their own money. The current list is only a starting point. I’m willing to accept amendments on the House floor to expand this bill and provide additional tax relief. Texas doesn’t need to find new ways to spend every available dollar. We need to collect less in the first place.
