My Boomer uncle once said the secret to the handshake is that if he says no just continue squeezing your boss’s hand until he says yes. Don’t even say anything either, and continue the eye contact 👁️👄👁️ 🤝

It still works like that on right side of the pic for trades and similar types of work.Dress nicely, knock on some doors,be presentable and polite ,shake some hands and drop off resume and you won't stay unemployed for too long.

"Has to reenter his resume into a bunch of boxes" - Yeah, this one hurts. People, have some self-respect.

I fell for this crap, made a bulletproof portfolio, spent nearly a working week creating examples of what the firm was looking for. I had the idea to deliver it in person, so I printed it and made it presentable. Drove 50-miles to their office, while hyping myself up. Parked up, walked into reception area and approached the staff working front desk. Laziest stereotype attitudes I'd ever seen, leaning back in chairs with one having their feet kicked up in background seemingly doing nothing. I explained I was there for the vacancy that was advertised online and that I wanted to see them in person. "You have to apply online". and so I said, well since I'm here is there anyone I can speak to, if I wait? "No." I won't forget the guy in background's face was a smirk at me. I told them I was serious about the job and asked them to give my portfolio to the person doing the hiring. I'm almost certain that they threw my work in the bin right away. Now I work on farms, it is physically demanding but has none of the soulless corporate crap.

It works exactly like that, provided your dad knows the manager.

The h1b hordes made this worse. If I post a job, within 3 minutes I get 100 apps from non-citizens using ai auto-apply software. I got my job (post covid) bc the hiring engineer contacted my professor which was their professor when they went through school. I scout in person now.

Honestly true... you use online to find out who may be hiring, but have to do the leg work of contacting a real person to actually get an interview. Otherwise your just shouting into a void.
